Visiting Pittsburgh, PA

The XYL & I are making a trip to the area SE of Pitt. in a few days. I was wondering what the dx'ing is like up there and what stations I should look for to log?

First, go here: www.radio-locater.com and type Pittsburgh in the "find US radio by city or zip" box. A list of Pitt area stations will then be listed. Check the map out, and to the same for other cities in the area. For further information, you can then select the station you are interested in, and click on the yellow rectangle with the ! in it.

Go to www.amlogbook.com to check the frequencies out. A word of caution. The logbook is a great resource, however the powers and hours of operation listed are not always accurate. I can see why this could happen, as it must be a real time consuming job keeping it up, and for free no less.

When in Pittsburgh, I would personally target Canadian and Northeast U.S. stations. You're from Texas, so Dxing from Pitt should be a blast what with all those legendary high power stations that direct their signals away from you.

The clears could tune:
680 690 710 730 800 850 900 940 950 1000 1010 1050 1060 1070 1080 1090 1110 1130 1140 1160 1170 1180 1190 1220 1500 1520 1540 1550 1560 1570 1580 1610 1620 1630 1640 1650 1660 1670 1680 1690 1700. And don't forget 1590 WAKR & 640 WHLO in Akron.

But who wants to listen to the radio in Pittsburgh? There is ethnic food to eat, and there are bars to visit.

Pittsburgh the city doesn't suck. Love the food and nightlife. ;D

Pittsburgh does offer a chance for a Southwerterner to hear all those east coast and Canadian stations he can only read about.

Interesting city; the radio dial is less interesting now that WAMO is gone. However, some of the 'suburban' (in quotes because they're not really 'burbs in the classic sense) rimshots are very interesting. For example, there were a couple of excellent oldies class A rimshots around there.

Be it AM or FM, reception is going to be a lot more interesting if you can be somewhere higher up and get out of the river valleys. They're deep and will cut down on your reception possibilities.

Take the time to look around the 'burgh. The city itself is surprisingly nice and the areas around the city are quite different from the classic "tract house" model that you see in most places. Lots of former mining and industrial areas located right near very beautiful affluent areas. Make sure to hit Primanti Brothers for a great sandwich!
