I guess I can post on this board due to the fact its kinda like a Philly establishment. I have not heard them in ages with all the satellite and HD and this and that in the Philly market. Today I just happen to turn them on around 11AM, I was pleasantly shocked. I could not believe the massive playlist and the great "oh wow" tunes I heard. Grant you the presentation is not that good but the sound quality, processing and stereo separation were superb. They played better oldies than Sirius/XM's 60's channel, I had them from Cherry Hill to South Philly with no problem. I just could not change them, all the music was top notch and nothing you can here on T radio nowadays. My question is should OGL take this approach and why is WVLT so good music wise.....I heard them advertising brokered shows at different times after Fleetwood but the dayparts are fabulous...sounds kinda like a mom pop signal like WHAT...just my rant..

The midday host at that hour, Lou Costello, has a tendency to play many of the "oh wow" songs heard on the schedule. WVLT is an OK oldies station, but it's also quirky in some areas. Of course, one being that it's one of the few oldies stations that carries brokered shows on a regular basis. (For the longest time, I thought Dave Fleetwood and the other hosts were brokered - or at least, since he doubles as the station's VO guy on spots, his music show was a "barter" thing.) Like most oldies stations, they've been mixing in some 80's songs lately - but they haven't purged the older entries - at least not yet. By the way, another of their "quirks" is that every Monday they play an 80's song right before the Tatz show. No matter how unconventional they might be, you can't say they're not doing anything right, because they're still on the air, and obviously making some money.

Thanks for the great info...I sampled them again this morning, the host seems to lean more R&B, but in general he did play some great "oh wow" popish tunes and Fleetwood sounds like he should be in a top 5 market. The so-called fly in the ointment is when I heard the Geat is on at 5, I thought he was done in radio <joke>, well from 6am to 5pm its a good catch, and a change from Satellite Oldies.. ;D While we are in that area, let me ask you a question; I have been trying to find the answer to, I recall in the 60's an AM top 40 station I think they were on 1360 now the home of WNJC, they were out of Vineland, is this so and what was their calls and wattage and tower array, location and number of towers, hope that is not too much to ask....I do know WNJC has been operating illegal since their birth, they should utilize the two large and two small towers daytime (directional) to shoot a powerful signal into South Jersey and the one strobe and one small tower at night, (directional) to keep the same pattern but with less power. They still use only the one strobe tower at 1kw, (omindirectiona) to cover Philly, which was not in the game planl, guess the FCC just dont care....

WWBZ - The studios were located on Delsea Drive in Vineland. Among their on-air personnel were Warren Crescenzo (sp?), John McIntyre, Joe James and Jim Harlan. Jim went on to a long, successful on-air career in Philly at WIOQ and then in NY at, among other stations, WNEW-AM. He passed away a while back at too young an age.

How much do you think they Bill every month/year?

Guestimate?

Gotta be pretty darn good...

Lou Costello? Loved his movies....isn't he about 110 by now? Not bad for a portly guy!

OK, just couldn't resist. ;D

Yes, I totally agree that WVLT is a refreshing change to what WOGL offers up most of the time. Their signal is just fine into south Philly and can be heard well beyond. Love the music! The only issue I have with them is that they tend to have some strange talk programming on now and then. Could never tell if it was brokered or just extremely focused local south Jersey talk - I never lasted long enough. Those shows sounded pretty bad though.

Thanks for the info, how much power did they put out, were their towers in Vineland and how many, were they 24/7...I know they were not receivable in Philly, were they genuine top 40 and what years were they hit music.

It's a great station running on a shoestring budget. You would be very surprised when you actually look at their studio. Some pirate stations have better equipment.

I heard them on the way home tonight (after 11 PM), and they were running "the oldies station" satellite feed from Jones. They generally use Jones from Midnight or 1 AM until 6 AM. (They also sometines use it on weekday holidays.) Could it be that they've lost their brokered client for late night slot on Monday?

The Jones feed isn't bad as generic national oldies go, but it's very different from WVLT's daytime stuff, which is very Philly-oriented, or at least East Cost-oriented. The station could benefit from being more consistent, but the problem is economic. I understand they make half their revenue from the brokered stuff -- some of it real garbage, though a couple of things are actually good -- that they run weekday evenings and all day on weekends, and those are not the money dayparts. And of course, the brokered income also includes Blavat's 5-7 PM slot weeknights, which is usually considered afterrnoon drive.

(Incidentally, Nick said, "You would be very surprised when you actually look at their studio. Some pirate stations have better equipment." In fact, you might be shocked. You'd probably say that "shabby," as a description of the physical plant, was an understatement!)

Last night I heard the satellite oldies feed after midnight, wow that has to be the worst selection of standard worn out tunes, sorta like WOGL. Its nothing compared to the 6am - 5pm selection which is by far the best around....It would be nice if they just had a board-op or replay the daytime cuts after midnight, it would be so much better than what is on the bird....but we all must admit, WMID has any oldies station beat hands down, music wise....

I guess RJ must read these boards. Tonight during his show, he made reference to the fact that "they're talking about us on the internet."
