would appreciate your critique of my VO work and if you know of someone who can throw me a job or two?http://www.garybegin.com/voice.default.htmI have a great 1 page I'm currently sending to radio stations/tv/cable/advertising agencies, etc. ANYONE have any suggestions on where to find work with a limited budget?I'm a former RI resident, and began my radio career in Woonsocket and later worked in Providence.I'm also doing some radio programming consulting. If you know of ANYONE searching for a consultant, I'd appreciate your passing their contact info to me ASAP. You can see my consulting website:http://www.identityprogramming.comThanks so much in-advance for your help.Gary BeginIdentity Programming

Hi Gary..... Well as a Voice Talent who has also been doing this for 19 years I can relate to you. In that time I have learned that this isn't really a Business of what you know. It's a Business of WHO YOU KNOW! More importantly..... WHO KNOWS YOU! I've heard the worst announcers in the world get work. People who stutter, stammer and lisp are heard on my television every single freaking day. Stuttering John Melendez (Announcer for The Tonight Show) is pulling in over a half Million Dollars a year just for his 45 second opening announcement. He doesn't even do it LIVE. Since he stutters, He has to pre-record it just to ensure that the show has a TAKE that they can use. Then he sits in the Audience for the show and that's that. We've e-mailed back and forth before. He's a nice guy. But here he is with the Best Announcing Gig in all of television and he's been known to stutter like crazy. If any of you remember John's work on The Howard Stern Show, then you know what I'm talking about. The only reason the Tonight Show hired him was because they saw him as a guest star on the reality TV show "I'm A Celebrity- Get Me Out Of Here!" and then basically decided he seemed like a cool guy. So they hired him. He certainly did not get hired for his announcing ability. That's for sure. Prior to The Tonight Show job he had never done any voiceover work at all! Sad part is there are plenty more like him. So Why do they get work??? Because they put themselves out there and make themselves known. This is far more important than having a great Demo. So my advice to you is to do some unique things to get yourself noticed. Don't ever give up. Also know for a fact that you are a lot better than many who have national gigs. The only thing standing between you and them is the fact that Most producers don't know that YOU even exist. So I guess it's time to change that! ;)Oh yeah...... Go buy this book at the link below. This certainly will help as well.Secrets of Voice-Over Success : Top Voice-Over Actors Reveal How They Did Ithttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1591810337/qid=1121203228/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_ur_1/002-6935283-8353661?n=507846&s=books&v=glanceThen while you are waiting for the Book you really need to listen to this Spectacular interview with two Voiceover GIANTS (Joe Cipriano and Don LaFontaine) They are two of the most successful guys doing voiceovers at the moment. No doubt you've heard them. Now listen and learn from them. This is really some great stuff. here's the linkhttp://www.harrisonline.com/audio/voiceover.mp3 Have fun and Good Luck!

Thanks for the help pal...I appreciate it greatly. Send me your name and e-mail so we can chat sometime.Gary

The worst are those damn Shaws spots. They're husband and wife conversations that are hard to pull off anyway and the wife is OK but hubby sounds like he's got a wad of gum in his mouth and has this wicked accent when he says "prahces" instead of "prices".Why the hell does someone who sounds like that even get into this kind of work?

There is a certain furniture store that has a female Voiceover Talent that lisps up a storm. I want to say it's Cardi's Furniture... but I'm not sure. All I know is that she should not even be allowed near a microphone.

A-HA! it just dawned on me. I believe the Lisper I speak about Voices the Commercials for Alperts! I'm not completely sure.... but I'm 90 percent the way there.

Skynet74,Why are you ragging on a fellow VO talent? A lisp? Excuse me for being forward, but are you actually a compensated VO artist on all those national clips on your demo reel?We should all support each other and not tear down others work!Great book recommendation by the way!!Cheers! :D CM

Well first off I had no clue that "said" talent was here on this board. Well maybe she isn't. You didn't actually say that she was.. did you? Either way I apologize to her. I'm not here to purposely offend anyone and I am sorry if I caused any hurt feelings. However..... if it will make the "mentioned" talent feel any better, I did hear her on an Alpert's spot last night and I did say to myself..... "SHE SOUNDS BETTER. So take it for what it's worth. I'm an honest guy and I'm going to come here with my honest opinion. Plenty of people have said that I Suck! It's just part of the business. I would rather have people be honest with me than to stroke my ego with false praises. Thanks to those honest opinions I feel that I have dramaticly improved my Voiceover delivery. Their words hurt in the short run.... but I realized they were right..... and it has helped me tremendously in the long run! Now with my new demo I have more work coming in than ever. As of this week I even have an Agent interested in signing me. I only wish people told me that I sucked sooner! lol. ;)

John I know you come across as ornery (in a good way) at times but I have a lot of respect for what you've said. You dish it out but you take it without whining & you're painfully honest with yourself. Too many in this business,be it VO work or on-air,throw hissy fits at the slightest hint of criticism. I'm in agreement with their reaction when the criticism is founded in sour grapes but a lot of it is just general media talk where everyone has a right to an opinion. I really do hope you meet with a lot of success as you have the right attitude. The attitude in this business that everyone who criticizes a station secretly wants to work there is ridiculous anyway & even though you've taken it on the chops on this board over the years with your comments I've never really felt it's sour grapes with you.

You know, I asked for assistance yet only have 1 reply directed toward my actual question. Was it a difficult question? Why does this board go off on such tangents and not stay on-topic? I'm asking for some help...can anyone PLEASE help me?Gary

I also don't like how people whine when they don't get what they want right away or get their question answered the way they'd like. This is life, it's radio-info.com... things don't go like you expect or want them to al lthe time!

Paul:Your reply helps me how? LOL.Stay in North Dakota. It's a good place for you.If you can't offer anything helpful, don't waste my time and yours.Gary

Somehow i feel the comment "Stay in North Dakota. It's a good palce for you" is some negative shot at me or the lack of talent you think I might have.If you're THAT DESPERATE for someone to listen to your samples and offer their opinions.. find a consultant and pay them a few bucks. Stop complaining here....

Hey Paul:You're quick! LOL.By the way, [EDIT]..I AM a consultant....LOLWhat a maroon....[EDIT*=name calling]

Yes. I'm quick. Your point? And yes, I'm aware you're a consultant, I am intelligent even when some people on here think otherwise....... Why are you so ansty pantsy like to get someone to listen to your stuff??

I asked a simple question; for some genuine. Have only received 1 real response. The rest have been from angry, burnt-out wanna-be talent.By the way, I know you're quick...[EDIT*]..I also not so desperate as to take a job in North Dakota.Must be nice being in a state NO ONE lives in! You get totalk to a lot of "sheep." [EDIT**]...Now, [EDIT***]......Unlike you, I have to WORK for a living.Gary[EDIT*=derogatory][EDIT**=derogatory][EDIT***=insult]..

I can take a good ribbing, roasting or whatever... and I've remained professional while being honest thru out this entire thread. However, referring to me and others as angry, burnt out, wanna be talen is not only rude by wrong. I'm not angry OR burnt out.. I love my job, I love where I am..... it's FUN! (yes, there is work involved of course..)!now, on the subject of talent....... I KNOW I've got a long ways to go and alot to learn........ however, even though this is north Dakota.. why would I have been hired for Mornings and Program/Music Director if i didn't have some talent.. hmm?By the way, all the sheep are in Montana pal, thanks anyways though. We may not serve nearly as many people out here as you city folk in New England.. but our listeners are unbeleiveably loyal to us! I'm PROUD to be working for the TWO HERITAGE stations in the entire area. When your AM can claim Eastern MT, Western ND and South Saskatchewan. and is the secondest biggest Am signal in the state.. that's pretty damn f*ing cool.Ok, sorry to brag, but I had to.. I love this palce! I'm hardly a mental midget either.. I think you need something that makes you not so darned cranky.

Paul:They hired you cause you work cheep! They'd hire a sheep in North Dakota if they could. There's no real talent there. You start or end your career there...nothing more.[EDIT]If you're such a "talent," how come you have all this spare time for posting on radio boards? Go start a car wash. You're not doing any real programming.Just another "yes" man for Clear Channel. LOLSpeaking of which, I have work to do.Gary[EDIT*=derogatory]..
