Can someone recommend software that will alter your voice ? I'm not talking about the funny "make a man sound like a woman"..but something that will add resonance, or chage the octave without changing pitch? Something that will add some balls to the mix.I'd like to add that to my home studio for certain types of spots..thanks..C.L.

1. Change the octave without changing the pitch is an oxymoron.
2. Realistically, if your voice doesn't have the qualities you describe, there's nothing you can do about it. You can't add what isn't there naturally.
3. You CAN bring out some of those qualities by maximizing what you already have. Compression and EQ are the most common modules used in voice processing...Any audio software should contain these features.

Indeed there are, though none do a great job. The two best pitch-shifting formant-correct processors are Waves SoundShifter and Celemony Melodyne. Both are great for processing a background singer, but neither is great for VO.

yes i'm aware of vocal recording software..used way back in the 90's when i did studio work..as a lousy singer i always wished for something that would make me sing on pitch..i can get it mostly..but just not a gifted singer like some are..but thats another story..i haven't really done any in depth research, on voice altering software, but i figured there must be something out there that production studios use that enhance a voice..make it somewhat ballseier ?..i know if i sound like pee wee herman..nothing is gonna make me james earl jones..but if something would drop or raise a voice 1/2 octave without pitch shift..i would love to have it..i have a small behringer mixer that has a lot of sound effects on it and i've played around with it some and found some interesting sounds not usualy associated with voice..but nothing i would use for a straight spot..i managed a music store for 20 years and in the mid eighties, karaoke was getting started..we had several top line machines at that time..but changing keys..just slowed down or speeded up the music..i may be asking for technology that doesn't exist..just thought since we alledgedly landed on the moon in 69....surely by now..kermit the frog could get close to ruben studdard ..lol..thanks for the input..
If you're simply talking about changing the pitch without changing the speed, pretty much any software will do it. But it won't really sound right. Dropping the pitch by half an octave is a HUGE amount. One or two semi-tones is about as far as you can go and keep it sounding human. Far more than pitch, chest resonance and the design of the vocal tract makes all the difference. Goldwave is a good place to start.

Audacity Audio Editor from sourceforge.net is free software that can, among other things, change pitch without changing speed. As Emmett says, it ain't gonna change it far while keeping it sounding human.
