Voice tracking weather should be not allowed on radio...

I got stuck on I-91 for about 3 hours between Brattleburo and White river JCt. what usually takes about 50 min... anyways I was listening to the radio while both sides of I 91 had snarling locked solid traffic. Remember this is VT whats a traffic jam again? Kudos to 99 rock for the only station saying half the night it was going to be cloudy and then snow for the overnight hours... too bad i don't get them in Ma or Brattleburo where I could have stayed the night.
Since this storm was only winter weather advisory the EAS for Many stations was not activated so no one got any updates on the weather. I wish I got this message earlyer from fox 44. I would have stayed home until tomorrow.

"I91 from MA all the way to White River Junction and on I89 from the NH line all the way up to Randolph the roads are extremely hazardous with multiple accidents. Travel at this time is not advised."

Jamie, how dare you.... Expecting WEATHER COVERAGE from a RADIO STATION??!??! You must be kidding yourself. And if you were listening to an FM (a station that is more interested in the Hits from the 70's 80's 90's and Today) forget it. Instead of the lib freaks going for the fairness doctrines return, why don't they return to making a radio station do what it is supposed to do? Weather, for instance.

But my favorite is from Will.... "Next time, look up the weather before you leave..." Beautiful.

Hey Will, God bless you, you've never had a chance to work in a real radio station, have you? Don't feel bad, most people today working in our business haven't either. You guys really missed out on how great radio could be.

Really, I'm not picking on you guys. Radio used to be REALLY GOOD. When weather is bad, there should always be someone on call to go to the station to handle these things. But when there are six stations in one building, tough to do, I guess in today's climate. But 40 years ago (and I'm dating myself here) it was easily done and expected. Even the smallest radio stations did it.

Have a great day you guys....

funny you mention that... I did In CT between the wilbert cross (rt 15) and I-691 in CT because traffic was so bad.
the problmem in VT exits are 10 miles apart. many of the accidents were in between exits
the entire trip of what usually takes me 4hrs 20min took about 11-12 hours last night...

WMWM (Salem MA) has "robotic weather" from some sort of service; during automation, it is automatically injected but if a DJ is on, he or she has the choice of downloading the forecast and playing it. It had to be trained to, for example, say "double you em double you em" because if "WMWM" was typed into the program
it would come out "doubleyou mm double you mm" etc. It takes a forecast and has a robotic voice reading it.

I just want to get this straight. You expected live and local on a sunday?

People don't listen to the radio on Sunday....any consultant will tell you that ::)

Here's one for you...

I went into the radio station Tuesday of last week....and recorded weather forecasts for Wednesday - Sunday.

3 each day...5am-noon, noon-5pm, 5pm-11pm.
This means the weather forecast you would have heard at 10:25 Sunday night, November 30th....was actually recorded Tuesday morning, November 25th at about 10am.

Isn't technology amazing?

Hey, the Farmer's Almanac is out. Why not do the forecasts for next June now? LoL

For road conditions in Vermont, call 511, or if outside Vermont 1-800-ICY-ROAD. Also on the web at www.511vt.org.

Weekend weather forecasts on the stations I work for are rarely much more than 12 hours old (except in the pre-dawn hours). Nighttime forecasts are recorded mid-afternoon. We may not have somebody in the building 24/7 on the weekends, but we try to keep the weather relatively up-to-date. For instance, on Sunday, our forecast was calling for sleet and freezing rain to change to rain later at night, which is exactly what happened in our area. If there are MAJOR changes to the forecast, someone will go in and change them.

On the subject of recorded weather, I have been in northern NH upon occasion early on a Sunday morning and heard one station play the forecast for Friday morning. I have heard this phenomenon several times on the same station, months apart. If an old forecast plays in the woods, does it make a sound?

That is just stupid. Fire this guy. Today.

Do you guys realize you are giving people reasons to NOT listen to your stations? God help us.

I absolutely believe that weather becomes THE most important reason why people turn on the radio in New England during the winter. To have an out-dated forecast is the single best way to lose listeners. Conversely, if people trust your weather, they trust your news and pretty soon, that's where they set the radio dial.

Anybody who works an air shift needs to realize that weather is a top priority. Never become so lazy that you don't update your forecast. And always remember to make it sound like "an event" because it truly is an event, seeing it rules our lives six months a year.

I, for one, LOVE voice tracked and pre-recorded weather….on the cluster across town. I giggle like a school girl when listening to their obviously outdated weather forecast run on the weekend when our folks are live, and local. I relish how on holiday MONDAY mornings I hear Friday nite’s weather..(tonite getting down to, and tomorrow, Saturday..) and I smile, knowing it’ll run like that on all 5 of their stations until…maybe after 10:40, because there’s no one from the cluster to dub the new weather (emailed from the tv station) into Maestro, until after the satellite morning shows go off. I spent almost 3 years trying to explain it to them before I went across town. Now, guess who’s number one and damn near sold out, and who’s 4th, 5th, , 8th, 13th…..and running P-I’s and PSAs in morning drive?

Ya can’t fix stupid.

Remaster! Nobody listens on Sundays?? What planet do you come from?? Most consultans will say just the opposite. In fact, in many surveys done over the last few years shows that there are MORE listeners on Saturdays and Sundays than during the work week.

Think (and do some research) before you speak!!

THANK YOU Will...

And 1976, did you say Maestro? What an abomination THAT is...

That's a question of A. not having enough wx files, or B. a PD being too lazy to program them in and tell his/her staff how to think ahead when doing a forecast a couple days into the future. Which brings me to this point--95% of the time, a vague generalized forecast will CYA. June? "Mostly sunny, a few clouds, a possible sprinkle here and there, highs in the mid to upper 60s." December? "Chance of isolated flurries, a mix of sun and clouds, highs in the low 30s."
I'm not saying that if wx conditions change drastically, arrangements shouldn't be made to update, and of course pre-recorded wx's preclude the possiblity of current conditions (with most systems, anyway...I know one in the Bangor market that tags wx with a temperature), but for a VT'ed station, up-to-the-minute wx's are the least of the problems (again, MOST of the time). My .02...but what do I know? I'm not in the biz. :)
