Voiceover Business

I have always wanted to get into the voiceover business. My question for the people doing it: Is there any real money in it and is it hard to build up a steady client base? I have some basic equipment to get started but if there is any one great piece that you think I would need please let me know.

The first thing that you should do is check out the Production Board. You'll find everything you ever wanted to know about the voiceover business there.

I think it's a difficult profession to sustain...UNLESS...you happen to have a unique personality voice (or unusual character voice) that listeners and advertisers happen to like?

After discovering I was able to perform at least 40 different voices...including my own...and then listening to several earlier spots, promos and airchecks...I found that most of the voices I performed sounded very natural :)---while a few others were 'bad caricatures' that didn't work at all!

Suggestion---don't attempt to pawn off a style or type of voice to an advertiser, client or program director unless you're 100% convinced that the voice you're trying to do...WORKS!

And when in doubt...get a 2nd, 3rd or 4th opinion. The general consensus will keep you from getting angry or frustrated with your talent(s)! :p
