VOIP for studio lines

Any thoughts on using a VOIP service for multiple lines (studio lines)?

Our issue with telco is 12-15sec disconnect time.

Does telco's copper wires sound better than VOIP's T1?

Is there any latency and would our studio telco hybrids interface well; mix-minus, null, etc?

tnx

VOIP via a T1 circuit sounds good. Every bit as good as a standard copper POTS connection.
The TV station which I recently retired from converted to VOIP. I never noticed a latency issue.
The only downside is that a circuit problem will kill all of your lines.
I'm not sure how a standard telco hybrid would interface. A call to the manufacturer of your hybrid would be a good starting point.

Read the white papers on the Telos and Comrex sites.

We've switched to VOIP lines. Not that good. The audio is no better than the old POTS lines. The audio on the VOIP lines often breaks up...almost to the point of buffering where we go through 3 to 5 seconds of drop outs. And the VOIP lines are not compatible with any of the existing Telos gear in the studio. (Can you say special black boxes that had to be built to get telephone audio on the air?) Oh yeah...the company (big one with recognizable name) supplying the VOIP lines doesn't have a clue about broadcast and often takes days to get something fixed.

Existing not, but the new Telos VX system is VoIP compatible.

We went with a CLEC for VOIP provisioned Telco service two years ago. Nary a problem and I built and provisioned the Asterisk/Trixbox PBX. The listener lines sounds fine on the air and that is using analog extension boxes to interface with the analog Telos.

If you are having buffering or latency issues, look at your router or PBX. Something is not configured right.
