Vorsis in LA?

Went to an SBE meeting recently where Wheatstone was showing off their Vorsis audio processors, and heard the amazing claim from their spokesguy that there are LA stations who have the thing. I find this hard to believe since every time I've heard a Vorsis in a real-world setting (i.e., set up for air, running into a dummy load) it absolutely shreds voices... but I digress.

Does anyone know of any LA station actually using this box? Or do they simply "have" one on loan in the workshop to fiddle with?

Hey, Maybe Rick Dees has one to go with his Aphex 230(really now).ha..That Vorsis better sound better that what i heard.Really happy clippers and high end splatter.(can you say distortion)They need to hire someone with good ears.won't get near a Omnia 6 or orban 8500. They need to tweak the code on that baby.May package them with a wheatstone, other than that i don't see them as any serious competition..IMHO as always...

I heard they hired someone to fix the algorithms.

It's an interesting concept, but having that many bands just makes my stomach turn.

Was at the same SBE meeting. They had their guy there who supposedly fixed the box. Yup, voices were pretty ratty sounding. I heard this also at a station demo.

I heard the box at a NYC SBE meeting. Sounded good with music, no voice demo.

They have Jeff Keith. He's not stupid, he knows processing.

He was at the demos I attended, and voice sounded terrible...VERY CLIPPED. Yet, the station's existing processing had no voice issues at all. Maybe he doesn't know as much as they claim. BTW: This was the 31 band box.

You gotta admit, though. The user interface (when you hook it into a computer) is pretty straight forward. I was sold on that aspect, at least.

I wonder why they went for 31 bands, not 32?

I believe MP2 audio (MPEG Layer II compression) is split into 32 bands as well.

There's a company in France that's selling FFT-based audio processors. That gives the potential for thousands of bands.

Doesn't matter how nice the interface is, if the box doesn't sound good, on all material.

Oh yeah. Absolutely true.

I was with WGLIRadio at that same meeting, except that while he was playing with the box, I was catching up with another friend. I just never thought about checking it out for some odd reason but later WGLIRadio told me it sounded fine.

It would have been smart if the Vorsis guys had hooked up a couple speakers in the conference room, so that way everyone could hear what it sounded like. Sometimes I've noticed that some things sound better through earphones, and bad through speakers. Or vice versa. Or it depends on the kind of speaker you're using (table radio vs. car radio vs. walkman, etc.). I guess it just depends on the circumstances.

I should clarify

We found a greatest hits of the 70's in WOR's production studio and were playing with that. A number of cuts from rock to disco to "Until You Come Back To Me" by Aretha Franklin. Box seemed to deal with all those OK. Did not get to hear voice.

I wish to respond to recent posts regarding Vorsis but not from behind an anonymous moniker spewing FUD. Please allow me to address a few salient points…

At the recent SBE meetings we used a CD player to feed the processors. It wasn’t a real-world demonstration and it wasn’t meant to be as we only needed bouncing meters and active FFT displays for Jay Tyler’s live GUI software demonstration.

The claim that a Vorsis processor “shreds voices” is unfounded since customers have been more than thrilled with the performance and quality of Vorsis products released so far, and more are coming.

Our FM and HD limiters operate on the ISO Standard 1/3 octave center frequencies and they are limiters by the way, not compressors. The extremely narrow and rectangular bandwidths created by mathematically perfect parsing means that the limiters only need to do a small amount of work compared to limiters with fewer bands, much like the difference between a chainsaw and scalpel. And remember how critical bands fool the ear? Same goes here.

Having designed all kinds of processing schemes over the past 30-plus years the new Vorsis approach intrigued me when I first learned of it. Knowing now that it can (and does!) work, and that it works well, I’m betting that the product line will be a success.

I’m always eager to talk about how our product’s algorithms are unique and I’ve included my personal contact info in order to facilitate this. Public forums like this one tend to be less than factual when anonymous posting is the norm and for that reason I tend to not use them very often.

All I know is when I listened to the demo at the NAB I was less than amazed with either products sound (with the settings being used, of course). The mic processor sounded clipped and hideous-sounding. Maybe the presets were set entirely wrong, but as I heard it that day at the NAB show in Las Vegas was nothing short of terrible.

They do make a excellent console though. :)

Totally agree. Vorsis is an answer to a question nobody asked. Stick with proven products and give Wheatstone 5 to 10 years to get it right.

What I heard sounded quite good at the SBE meeting. I would suggest a real demo with any box before you draw any conclusions.

WGLI's points are right on. Particularly with a product new enough that the algorithms may well have evolved since last April's NAB.

The shredded voices I heard were a few weeks ago at a station demo.

Was this on air, or on the bench?
