VOTE JOE-FM?

So, what was the point of these signs? Was this encouragement to get people to vote or to back door advertise their station and possibly corrupt diary holders?

Yeah I saw those signs too! That was interesting way to market their business I think was original. I do a lot of marketing work around the state and there's nothing like good old fashion geruilla marketing.

I agree...very witty, but very illegal. In just about every borough the station could get a $500 fine for each sign that a city worker has to pick up...these originated from the station, not like a bumper sticker that a listener could have just put up. Just as in a political campaign, signs must be cleared within so many hours of polls being opened or they are then collected and the candidate sent a bill. I'd just rather buy spots on TV 10.

Dumb idea from a cume building perspective too. Suppose I wasn't aware of what or where JOE FM was, but I wanted to check it out. The frequency wasn't printed on the signs. They can't sample the station if they don't know where to find it.

Google "JOE FM State College PA" and the first site on the search results is 3WZ.

The frequency is printed on the signs. It is too small to see from the road when driving. Hermes said it correctly, they're out of the legal time limit for the election cycle so those signs need to go away. Now that all of the candidates have removed their signs, the JOE FM signs stick out even more, so now I'm thinking this is a ploy to corrupt the diary holders.

"A ploy to corrupt diary holders," you mean like ads in a paper or signs outside a building? Quite corrupting. Signs like that are well within Arbitron's rule book. Good effort - agreed - the dial position is too small - they should fix that. Since JOE isn't a declared candidate - those signs, if on someone's lawn, are just a bit of freedom of speech aren't they?

Agreed. It's old-school guerilla marketing. If it achieves nothing more than name recognition, it's worth the $35 it cost. Pretty clever, though now is the time to show what good corporate citizens they are and drive the hearse around collecting them.

simple and effective. even without being a declared candidate, isn't there such a thing as write in votes still? :) marketing and advertising is a tough business that needs to be creative, eye catching and stand out above the crowd. that doesn't always mean big and expensive. it just means it needs to be remembered. either consciously OR subconsciously.

True and it's no different than the deal between the Nittany Mall and 3WZ. And, it is the effort of thinking outside the box. However, those signs are not on private property. If listeners want to put one out in front of their house, no problem. But these signs are set on public property where candidate signs sat and are required to be removed.

Since my township taxes go to the upkeep of that public property, I say get the trash off of it. Now that the elections are OVER, the word "VOTE" on the sign pretty much has a whole other meaning now, and that's diary influence.

Didn't you say that you weren't working in the industry, or ex-radio? How does Joe Public know anything about diary influence?

Yes and yes. Anyone who has worked around here long enough in such a small town knows radio, how good it is and isn't for advertising and some of have either had diaries or know someone who has had one. Add to that all of the reading about it and you have your answer.

Joe and Jane Public know a lot more about diaries than the pros think we know.

If I picked 100 people at random and asked them what would constitute distortion and/or bias of radio ratings, I'd get 100 blank stares.

and a 100 different answers...especially if those 100 people worked for Arbitron!
