Voting Begins Tomorrow!

Howdy All:

Just wanted to let you know that the nominating process starts Monday for induction in to the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. So, I thought we'd kick around the names of some very deserving folks who have not been honored as of yet.

Joe Ladd, Bill Bailey and Pam Ivey from KIKK have all earned a place for sure. Scott Arthur of KNUZ/KQUE and Colonel St. James-KILT,KKRW,KLOL, KLDE,etc will get two of my votes; and from the other side of the mic, Andy Hudak whiz-engineer.

If you are not a member, join up-it's 15 bucks. If you are a member, please vote. www.trhof.com

As a member of TRHOF's Council of Advisors, I can assure you if the voting is early and often from our area, there is a very good likelihood that the ceremony will be here.

After 30 years in the market, whether it was educating or participating, Cathy Forsythe deserves induction (posthumously). The former General Manager and Department Chair of KACC/Alvin Community College trained many of those in this market (like Tom Fontaine).

Please remember Cathy Forsythe when you fill out your nomination sheet!

I can't think of a more fitting tribute to honor someone who spent a lifetime not just fulfilling her own goals, but who placed the dream within reach of countless others.

I know I should have joined a long time ago...but I just paid my lifelong membership fee.

Now I just have to get a member number to vote.

It's fun to see folks I once worked with get this honor.

Can Joe Average Listener vote too?

I'm afraid not. It's not open to listeners or the general public. Membership in the Radio Hall of Fame is restricted to people who've worked in some aspect of the radio business, and only members are allowed to vote people into the Hall. Here's what the TRHoF website says about that:

To be eligible to be inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, you must have been employed within the borders of the great State of Texas at some time during your radio career. Only dues paying members may officially nominate and vote for the candidates. Voting Members may participate in the nominating and voting process by downloading the ballots and returning them by mail or fax. There are two steps involved; The nominating process and the vote by members for those who are nominated.

Definitions

"TRHoF Voting Member" - a person who has purchased a membership or been inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. You don't have to be a Texas resident to be a voting member. Members include individuals who now work in broadcasting, previously worked in broadcasting or who have a professional or financial interest in the broadcasting industry. Inducted and instated members have lifetime nominating and voting privileges.

"Inducted Member" - a person who, by a vote of the majority of members and approval of the Council of Advisors has been inducted into the "Texas Radio Hall of Fame"

I believe Andy is good at whizzing, but I'm not sure about that engineering stuff.

I may have looked over his name, but Wash Allen of KCOH I think deserves to be there. The Colonel also deserves it. I could be looking over these folks names, but former Texas Rangers & Dallas Mavericks Broadcaster Mark Holtz, who died in the prime of his career, should be in there. He had great pipes. Former East Texas Radio Station Owner, Tony Bridge should be in there as well.

Jim Bell has logged in a lot of time on Houston's airwaves since the 1960s. He has been heard on KIKK, KTRH and other stations; currently on the air at KUHF. Jim certainly qualifies.

Buddy Cantu (aka Buddy Clark) of KIKK fame and recently working for Bizradio is another cat who deserves a nomination.

I have a question.. I'm not a voting member or anything.. I should sign up, but haven't yet.. The question is, does the TRHOF limit the number of inductees each year?

pam ivey? what are you smokin?

Pam Ivey has been on the Houston airwaves since the late 1970s when she was on 96.5 KAUM. Whether you like her performance or not, is your rightful opinion and that's okay. However, Pam has spent many years on the air in this major market and she does deserve recognition for her tenure.

Though I've never worked with Pam, she was on many of the stations I've enjoyed listening to for many years, and I always enjoyed her show. I've also met her through several community functions that she emceed and found her to be very refreshing... so I guess, strictly from a listener's point of view, I would definately nominate her. (BTW... not smoking anything, but willing to try) ;D

If I was eligible to nominate, I'd add Lee Jolly's name to the list. He was on air for many years and, again from a listener's viewpoint, he did an excellent job (IMHO)

poops

These are some great nominations and I'll be voting for some of those already mentioned -- like Wash Allen -- plus Alex Bennett (the original in-your-face talk host in Houston in the late '60s who told me a couple of years ago that he loved Houston second only to his home city of San Francisco -- and he's a real poster boy answer to the question Is There Life After KILT?) Chuck Shramek (one of the funniest guys I've ever known; I miss him even today, as do many of us) --

And Mary McCoy, who's been on Houston AREA radio for how long? Well, she's a true lady so I'll simply say she has priority over almost all of us.

Another suggestion for your ballots: Weaver Morrow had a great run in Houston doing mornings on KRBE, Sunny and elsewhere, spanning decades. I think he's retired from radio now.

(And what about Johnny Goyen and Ronnie Renfrow? Those guys have been playing music on the radio since they were teenagers...)
