Vox closes on Clear Channel/Burlington

A friend of mine told me the deal got done Friday and the Clear Channel stations in Burlington and beyond (Star 92.9, CHamp 101.3/102.1, The Zone 96.7/960/1320 and WVTK 92.1) are now officially in the Vox camp. People inside the building seem to be very happy and excited at the change. Vox has some things to deal with--first being the morning show on Champ and mediocre ratings for everything but Star. This'll be interesting to watch. I'm told that Vox owner Ken Barlow is going to assume Market Manager duties and title.

First thing I would do would at Star would be to drop John Tesh in the afternoon and add a local voice.

Second thing I'd do is make it Hot AC again as it was at the turn of the decade. We don't need another station in the market playing 70's tunes. Why can't they play "Viva La Vida" 30 times a week?

It's been a few days now. Any word on any changes either in people or formatics? I expected something by now. The Blueberry people seem to move a lot faster than the Vox guys do. May be Vox doesn't know what they are doing.

Maybe Vox likes to give folks a chance to prove value before chopping them. Maybe Vox has decided that maybe a complete overhaul could alienate a lot of listeners. Maybe Vox would like to make sure they're making a good decision rather than a rash one. Maybe the employees don't have issues that would encourage their dismissal. Maybe they have some cash reserves that can stay the course better than Blueberry. Maybe they wanted to invest in RADIO, not radio's REVENUE.

Lot of maybes, don't you think?

maybe the clear channel maine group was bleeding so much red, bruce and lou had to cut payroll? Sometimes you have to go back to go forward.

i find it interesting that the maine clear channel thread is getting more discussion than the vermont thread, when most of the activity on this board is from NH/Vermont. You'd think all the wanna-be program directors/DJs would be all over this board, more than they are.

Really? Seemed like for the longest time, this board had a huge Portland bias.

It's now shifted to NH, with a seemingly disproportionate number of Burlington threads.

As for this deal, I know a person who will be joining the Vox/Burlington ranks shortly. I'm not dropping a name on this one, but I'm downright giddy that he's (allegedly) getting hired.

Is this the same Vox that owned a bunch of stations in the UV about 7-8 years ago? Don't recall much nice being said about them back then.

Well, I was :-[ one of the harsher critics before I understood what was really going on. I think they got in over their heads and was trying to duck out and remain relatively unscathed, especially once the economy started going south. This I expect, (or at least hope), have made the new Vox a wiser company than before, with a focus on doing things right. Of course, as is always the case, time will tell.

I just can't be negative about local ownership, even if it was a trying time working for them in the last incarnation, due to cutbacks. If I were, I might as well just hang up the headphones because there would be no reason left to love radio. :'(

Sick deal. I'll be sure to start streaming Star and Champ so I can hear your work again.

Can't wait to talk shop over a Molson XXX (ironic beer choice, huh?) ;)
