W-S-A-R afternoons!!!

I've been working in radio for a while. I'm going on my 8th or 9th year in commercial radio. I've always been a real fan of WSAR. I've been a fan since I was a child, growing up in Swansea, then moving to Fairhaven.- However, WSAR afternoons are awful right now. I have no idea what kind of line-up its going to be... I hope this show is only a temp fix. I tuned in today to the program, I tuned in on Friday as well... Its a joke! How long can you beat an issue....

I hope that Hector ( the general manager) realizes that this program will suck big time. The spring book starts soon.- This program will be the worst on the South Coast. It will hurt WSAR. Its obivious that Keri is going to be doing mornings-- and good for her! But the afternoon show is going to suck!- and its going to SUCK BIG TIME!

Eddy Garcia- knows his stuff ( not locally)- Mike Herren- he is back? Since when? WHATS GOING ON?- Wasnt he fired?- He know's his shit- but he ISNT READY FOR HIS OWN SHOW.

Looks like most radio's are going to be turned off during the afternoon drive. Most will be looking to a WBSM, WHJJ, or WPRO AM. - Think about it... " Do you really want to tune your radio in... and hear two IDOTS scremming and " studdering"

Ughhh..Ughh... Ughh..... ( Who am I?)

I much rather listen to Laura Ingram. - Or FM RADIO.

Does anyone know if this is perminent.- Is someone from WSAR going to actually come out and tell us.

Ryan, I dont believe a few things you said to be true. I really have never seen Keri, in person. I am not going to give my opinions on something that I dont have the backround on. Secondly, WSAR is a very popular station- to much of your dislike. If you didn't know.. - WSAR has the best ratings in the area. Its funny- Barrie Richard's beats out the " former mayor" in ratings- Isnt the mayor bringing in the big bucks too. Isnt he three figures?

Keri is taking over mornings and obviously something new will show up in the afternoon. This is different then my thinking of just a week ago when I thought that Keri may join Hec for mornings. I no longer think that. I think she'll go solo in the morning with a much more News driven program than the station has ever had. Hec must be out the door. That's just my guess. He's been on the air there for 119 years. I guess it's about time he sleeps in.

It's basically out of my market and I honestly don't have a great interest in Fall River. However I'll tune in over the next couple of weeks so that I can find out what these changes are. OK Wizz. If you are correct than that means my first thought last week was accurate. Hec and Keri in the morning. I've got my doubts about that combination. Hec's job is to be Mr. Happy and read Birthdays greetings all morning. He hosts the safest morning show in the country. He takes zero risks and does nothing creative. It's been the same show since the 70's. Kudos to Hec for sticking around. But let's face facts. He's never been about groundbreaking radio. He does his safe little morning show the exact way that he has done it for three decades.

How that kind of show is supposed to meld with Keri's type of program is almost unfathomable to me. It's already been Hec's show for more than 30 years. He's already the star. But Keri has a strong personality and wants to be her own star. Does she really want to join Hec and become the second Banana to Mr. Goodie? Not only will she be second Banana, But she'll be cohosting a show that is nothing like her own!

Am I the idiot here (or) am I missing something? I've seen some weird combinations in broadcasting, but this one would take the cake.

Hey Wiz, WSAR ratings are below a 1 . WPRO's rating are from 5 to 7 .

Barry Richards is the only Talent at Wsar. I heard him about a year ago.
The rest of the station is weak. College kids doing the news last I heard.
I just checked the numbers. WPRO is multi times above WSAR ratings.

Two things I can tell you about WSAR from when I worked there. Their audience was a lot older than most. Mostly an over 60 crowd. Maybe this has changed a bit since then. I don't know. Secondly.... the station was never a ratings Powerhouse. The night I was hired, the program Director told me that they don't pay much attention to ratings around there. Well the reason why was obvious. They didn't have any.

My guess is that Keri probably got that place more ratings than they have ever had, simply because her show caused controversy. Controversy brings in ratings. Simple as that. Unfortunately any ratings increase at WSAR would probably be slight no matter how good the talent is. The station has to much going against it. It's stuck with just about the worst dial position possible. Secondly it kind of has the same problem as ABC 6 TV has. By habit most people have just always tuned into competing stations instead. That habit has been passed down from generation to generation. It's hard to get people to make that switch.

I used to go into the studio in the afternoon before my shift to just hang out on occasion. The PD did afternoon drive. I remember him trying to figure out one day how many people were listening. He says to me..... "two percent of the people listening will call. Well I got 12 calls today John." So that means there are about 600 people listening!

I thought to myself..... THAT IS IT???? 600 lousy people are tuned into afternoon drive! But he seemed proud, so I wasn't about to rain on his parade. As small as those numbers were, I realize that he was probably right. Most likely half of that number dropped off for my evening show which made my situation even sadder than I had first thought. They even told me that the evening shift makes no money for the station. It was at that very moment when I realized that I really did work at a station that had almost no listeners.

So how does the WSAR of today compare to the WSAR of 20 years ago. My guess is that Keri has about 1,000 people listening in the afternoon. That would be almost twice the amount that my former PD claimed were tuned into afternoon drive at that time. Hec probably has closer to 2,000 people listening in the morning. Those may be good numbers compared to the past. But in the grand scheme of things, it's still not a lot of people. You can log into youtube and see videos that get 5,000, 10,000 or more views a day. So it's difficult to get excited about the 2,000 people who tune into Happy Hec when there are people sitting in their computer chairs who are more popular.

Dan Yorke threw out a number a couple weeks ago of about 20,000 people being tuned into his show on WPRO. So take it for what it's worth. Obviously WPRO has better ratings than WSAR. That's a no brainer. But also keep in mind that WSAR's signal barely reaches into Providence. So once again WSAR is at a great disadvantage in the Providence market. WSAR isn't a Providence station and it was never meant to be. It's a small community radio station. Nothing more and nothing less.

So how much do you think a person is getting paid there? wether it be an on-air talent or one of them college kids doing the news, which i heard i think. min.wage of $8? maybe $10, how about anything hire like $15?

Those of you, " who create gossip"; should consider a career adjustment. I've been working at WSAR for over a year. WSAR is moving in a great and productive direction. (Stay Tuned)

Keri has personally helped me in my radio career. My radio career has been driven from her. She dedicates alot of her time to WSAR, her staff, and her listeners. I, as a staff member.. am very gratefull for that......Those idots out there that DONT like her, too bad. Your jealous. I know, I am going to get a ear full from you all, but I don't care... I wasn't put up to this, nor would I be. I am just personally frustrated. Give me a break. Keri and I have had our ups and downs, but she is a experienced and dedicated person to her job. I respect her as a person, and respect her for job. Unlike most of you " unemployeed" radio-info board junkies. (None of you know what your talking about when you say things about the station... STOP talking about the station; I dont care if you worked there 10- 15- 20 years ago.- If you knew the industry.. Change is good)

If you didn't realize.... WSAR has improved greatly under Keri's leadership. I am expecting to get a large amount of people commenting on " Why am I saying this".. or " Why am I posting this."- I want to set the record straight. Those of you think WSAR isnt moving forward doesnt know what they are talking about.- There are exciting things coming to this station.

Keri- kicked butt in the afternoons in the cluster. I have the proof. Mental Note: " DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR ON RADIO- INFO- most of the time its wrong info. Barry is number one in the area as well.- Come on..... Look, do your research.... Know what you are talking about.

I just wanted people to know my personal experience. That is all. What I mentioned here is the WSAR that I knew. When I worked there the hosts struggled to even get a call. But if things have changed, than that's great. I'm happy about that. I just got done saying that Keri probably has brought in higher ratings than that place has ever had. Did you skip over that part?

Keri knows exactly what I do like and what I don't like about the station. I come here every other month to repeat it like a broken record. She should know by now. It's not like I'm trying to keep it a secret. I honestly had a blast working there. The pay sucked, some of the management changes sucked. But all in all..... there is still a piece of me that loves that place to this day. I had some good times there.

All I'm saying is that it is a small station that doesn't have huge ratings. Ratings might be better than what I had previously thought. Kudos to Keri for that. I'm only trying to paint a full picture of what I know from working there. So try not to feel to offended. You guys work hard and I'm not trying to take anything away from that. I just come here with my dopey opinions. That is all I do. Nobody should ever get bent out of shape over anything that I say.
