W234AD 96.5

Translator 96.5 W234AD licensed to Madison is on the air, and has been for a few months now. I've seen the parent signal change a couple of times with the last several filings with the FCC but the last one states it's parent signal is WYAM 890AM Hartselle which is not correct. The translator is still simulcasting WAYH 88.1 Way-FM. I don't expect this to remain the case since the translator offers no coverage improvement from WAYH's current full power signal. I wonder what the future plans are with this translator. Also, the translator's sound quality is terrible. Sounds almost like an AM station.

We finally have an answer as to the permanent parent signal/format for this translator. "Huntsville's New Country and The Legends, 96.5 WSLV, and 105.1 Athens." Wow thats a mouth full. 1110 AM WSLV Ardmore has expanded to the Huntsville and Athens markets with 105.1 W286DF moving to its new CP in Athens and with a simulcast on what is now 96.5 W243EP Madison/Huntsville. 96.5's sound quality is much better now as well. I am personally underwhelmed though as this market is oversaturated with Country stations, but there you have it. It is interesting to note that with the move of 105.1 to Athens, WSLV no longer has an FM presence in Ardmore.

Are they not using the Outlaw moniker anymore at all?

Their online presence is a real clusterfluff. The website link I had on my website is now dead. There's a Facebook page for Outlaw 105.1 that's still had activity as recently as the end of March, but no mention of the new frequency, or a new FB page that I could find. Nothing came up in a search, either.

The website link on that Outlaw FB page goes to a Cirrus Player stream that is just 20 second clips of current pop and hip-hop hits, not country music. The e-mail address posted mentions Cat Country. So they are either "Huntsville's New Country and The Legends" OR "Outlaw" OR "Cat Country" depending on where you look/listen. :ROFLMAO:

And on top of that, depending on where you look, this 96.5 translator is showing either WYAM Hartselle or WTKI Huntsville as the parent, not WSLV. Not that that's some big boo-boo but it's just a huge messy look right now.

I never heard any "Outlaw" name mentioned while I listened but to be honest I didn't listen for very long. I believe it was Cat Country until last year when Southern Broadcasting Corporation bought it and changed it to "Outlaw." As far as I know the 96.5 translator never did carry WTKI or WYAM's programming at any point in time that I can remember. It was rebroadcasting WAYH since its sign on far as I know. I don't expect much listenership for this station and its smaller signals since it didn't sound like it really offered anything wildly different than the already existing large signal country stations in the market. Maybe they intend on doing more local community focus but let's be honest, that really doesn't get you very far anymore these days, and having a mess of a presence online is a terrible business move for a start up.

The current format seems like a mix of current and classic country which is very similar to what Nash Icon is doing. I think if they are insistent on doing a country type format then maybe doing all classic country would benefit better. 105.7 WQAH is the only station really in the region doing true classic country and the station has a pretty good following in the area despite an extremely weak rimshot signal. At least doing true classic country would differentiate/fill a format whole with a format that already shows some success and on a local signal, even if it is a couple of translators. Just my 2 cents.
