W241CG 96.1 in Southington is now on the air with oldies rebroadcasting WNTY/WACM.
If you were one of those people who listened to WSRS on the way up I84 to Worcester you probably won't be able to anymore.
The signal is very strong north of Hartford.
 
Albeit in mono, I'm getting this station in New Britain's south end just fine.

5:45 PM update: Was that Michael Maze voicing the sweeper between songs just now? :confused:

Not surprising....you can almost see West Peak on Meriden Mountain from the south side of New Britain. MONO?
 
The FCC map shows a big lobe to the north and northwest and a smaller lobe to the southeast, so I'm expecting good reception in Meriden and Wallingford. There are big nulls to the east and northeast (protecting WSRS) and southwest (protecting WJVC), as you might expect.

The signal will vary some when I move my headphone cord. I'm listening through an old Insignia pocket FM-only HD radio receiver. It doesn't have a City/DX or mono/stereo switch.

Going by the legal ID, is this rebroadcasting WBMW-FM 106.5 HD3 or whatever?
 
I'm listening to their weak signal now in New Britain. It was weak downtown at the CT Fastrak station some, but improved in the areas of Hartford Road (CT Route 71) towards WestFarms Mall and Corbin's Corner.

Now then, is this station relaying WNTY-AM 990 of Southington or WBMW-FM HD3 of Pawcatuck? The little Insignia HD radio "Walkman" I'm using is FM only.

(I also noticed how they dropped in the legal for this new translator separately from the ID mentioning the other stations.)

I wonder if it's the same thing that I heard today. I was in voluntown ct using my radio headphones and there was an oldies station on 104.3. They said Kool 104.3 or something like that and said they played 60s,70s and 80s. Also, they played a commercial and the place was in Chicopee MA so idk.

Oh my goodness!!!!!!!! I'm so thrilled because 1180 doesn't come in very well on my radios so now I can listen to 104.3 in my yard!!! Idk where the translator is though.
 
We'll find out this weekend whether W241CG is truly relaying WNTY, I guess. The Southington station has several hours of Sunday ethnic/religious programming that's not carried on the other stations on the "network." Would carrying uninterrupted oldies (WACM?) be a violation of its license terms?
 
The Kool Radio people told me the other FM translator (104.3 FM) is also located in Hope Valley, RI. I had to look up Hope Valley. Apparently, it's actually part of the town of Hopkinton, close to the Connecticut border.

Good to know about where Hope Valley is. I had wondered about that for years when I first heard of AM 1180 back when it was WJJF.
 
I still remember Barbara Mandrell doing a TV ad for the old WJJF-AM 1180 once. It aired a few times on channel 26 of New London, back when they were simply independent WTWS-TV.
 
Okay thank you for the info. I currently receive it with slight static in Montville CT and in Voluntown CT I received it well with my headphones but slight picket fencing(I guess you would call it that on FM) when I move around the yard but it's a very listenable signal.
 
Perhaps it's coming off of the 1180 AM tower in Rhode Island? Again, their 96.1 FM signal is licensed to Southington and transmits from West Peak in Meriden. My guess is that it's likely on the WMRQ-FM 104.1 (Radio 104.1) tower. West Peak is a few miles south of where I am in New Britain. You can get a great (but distant) view of the towers on the Berlin Turnpike (US 5/CT 15) in Newington. Stand on the side facing northbound traffic. Walk down the hill from roughly Express Kitchens to about the parking for Friendly's and P.C. Richard and Son. (Granted, you're really not supposed to walk on the side of that road, but have done it many times before.)
 
Since I can't edit my previous comment: The 96.1 translator is definitely relaying WNTY-AM 990, as they were running the foreign language programming and music on Sunday morning. Also, the Kool Radio people are now running a spot saying how the programming is moving to the stronger signal of 1270 AM in Springfield on Friday, May 1st.
