W249BN

Periodically, I make a quick run through some of the CPs and applications that are outstanding in the Memphis area, just to keep up with the latest comings and goings. I did notice something mildly interesting this morning.

EMF has held a CP for a translator out East for quite some time. W249BN is licensed for 97.7 near Ellendale, the actual City of License. Interestingly, the CP is set to expire in just a few days, on 28 June. I wonder if this will actually get built-out in time. The translator was granted a minor modification to the CP earlier this month, but it does not appear to have stopped the clock. Tick-tock, EMF...

EMF also holds a CP for a translator in beautiful Midtown on 96.7. They have a few months left on that one though.

Radio Assist Ministry, Inc. has apparently let on CP lapse. This group was the holder of a CP for a 13-Watt translator in Hickory Withe on 106.3. It expired earlier this month. The Record I saw showed no outstanding applications to extend, but it certainly could have been incomplete.

And, so it goes...

I've been trying to keep up with the CPs for CCM translators in West TN with some help. EMF also has a CP in Covington on 102.1 that is due on the 28th as well. Just guessing, I'd think that there's a good chance they will make it on. They had a CP for a translator in Jackson at 96.9 and it came on the air earlier this week. They also had a CP in Union City that they cancelled because of buying 90.7 in Dyersburg, and that resulted in changing 88.9 in Union City to Air 1. I still keep hoping that 94.9 in Ripley will eventually change to Air 1 as well.

EMF also sold the translator at 105.5 in Millington to Radio Assist, but it will still carry K-LOVE from 94.7 at least for now. Is it on yet? I haven't been in Memphis recently. They also sold WRRI 88.3 in Brownsville to Radio Assist. It isn't on yet, but they do have the license.

Radio Assist/Edgewater appears to have also let the CPs lapse in Camden, Martin, Halls, and McKenzie as well. From what I've seen they have a lot of CPs that will probably not make it. Last month in the blog for Freedom Radio, their CCM/secular network that they're putting on their stations, they had a list of areas with CPs that they were looking for help to get on the air. Here's a link to the article: http://frxdomradio.com/blog/?p=31 , and the list of cities with CPs: http://www.freedomradiofm.com/help/Sites.htm

WRRI looks like it will be on the Freedom Radio network, but their signal will be so weak that they may not get out of Brownsville.

Sounds like they got it. Was just hearing Positive, Encouraging K-Love on 97.7.

Signal is pretty spotty in Germantown. But, one should expect that.

Next up -- 96.7 in Midtown, I guess.

In looking at the FCC records it looks like the translator on 102.1 in Covington was changed to 91.5, and they got the license to cover today as well. I don't know if they're on yet.

Also, is the translator on 105.5 in Millington on yet? That's actually owned by Radio Assist Ministries now, but they're still supposed to carry K-LOVE from 94.7 for now.

Apparently the K-LOVE translator in Covington at 91.5 is on now, although I don't know how long it's been on. I was working in Ripley today and could get it while I was there.

Apparently Radio Assist/Edgewater let their CP lapse on 98.7 in Union City as well. WRRI in Brownsville is still not on yet although they apparently have the license.

I was doing a random flip through the FM dial yesterday, and I was hearing K-Love on the 97.7 frequency that you were mentioning. If it is indeed out of the Ellendale area, why wouldn't they try Air 1 on this frequency, since K-Love already has Memphis pretty much covered on 94.7 and 94.9?

One reason they wouldn't run Air-1 is that they don't have a decent signal reliable enough to feed the translator.

Under the current rules, translators outside the "reserved band" (88.1-91.9) are not allowed to feed with satellites; they must actually rebroadcast another FM transmitter (which may be another translator).

I'm still hoping that EMF will eventually change WKVZ 94.9 in Ripley and at least some of its translators to Air 1. Although I like K-LOVE I'll admit that there is no real need for as many stations and translators as they have in West TN now unless some of them are eventually changed to Air 1.

Another question: Does the FCC allow a translator to rebroadcast another translator?

Yes. See 47 CFR § 74.1231(b).

There have been cases of multiple translators being daisy-chained together. But, that brings up its own set of problems, especially when the band opens up.

Apparently Radio Assist / Edgewater's translator on 94.9 in McKenzie got their license to cover recently and is supposed to carry WIGH, AFR's station in the Jackson area. This is apparently the only CP that they've actually been able to get up and going. Everything else they had applied for in West TN has lapsed.

Also, they apparently backed out of the deal for 88.3 in Brownsville, and that permit has been cancelled, so it looks like that station won't be coming on. I had really hoped that this station would come on and carry either Air 1 or Freedom radio, but it apprently won't be happening.

Also, 94.9 in Ripley is still carrying K-LOVE and hasn't changed to Air 1.

Also, is 105.5 in Millington on yet?

not noticed 105.5 still... but 97.7 was repeating Columbus MS the other night after the bad weather hit out east... it had a solid signal also... i could not hear a trace of it but ripley was owning 94.9 in the car
