W262BM 100.3 Charlotte NC

Found This Station While In The South Park Area Of CLT Today. Apparently It Re-Broadcasts WNCW 88.7 FM. Normally I Appreciate Rebroadcasting Such A Unique Station, However, This New Radio Station Really Interferes With Me Getting 100.3 ''The Buzz'' From Winston-Salem. I Suppose I Now Have To Buy A Directional Antenna For The Home. When Does It Become ''Overkill'' To Have All These Repeater And Low-Watt Transmitter Radio Stations Out There???

Steve.

Steve,

It becomes "overkill" when a station has repeater(s) & there are some LPFM stations that cause this issue. I'm sure that 'NCW knows that listeners know where their dial position is (88.7) & that listeners know where to tune to receive educational programming, etc., but to go to 100.3 - I'm sure WVBZ isn't happy about not being received in Charlotte now. I used to get them on the SC border & into the airport area (sometimes they skip in) but now have to head to Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem.

There has been a lot of controversy over this. When Praise 100.9 moved to town, WNCW had to relocate their translator to another frequency. But they had a lot of Charlotte fans who couldn't get a good signal from WNCW. It's a highly regarded Triple-A/Americana station (with bluegrass, too!) and it's a pretty big deal. True, Charlotte doesn't have a rock station in the style of The Buzz, although 93.3 The Planet is similar in some ways.

As I recall, Clear Channel redirected WVBZ's 100.3 signal further away from Charlotte towards Burlington a few years back, and doesn't necessarily care whether it reaches Charlotte or not, considering that it's primarily a Triad area station.

WNCW's translator was originally at 100.7 transmitting from the Colwick tower at Sharon Amity and Randolph Rds. They indeed had to relocate the signal due to 100.9's move-in back in 2003, and at the same time could not renew their lease for the location of the antenna at Colwick (now Sonic Automotive's HQ). That led to the shift to the diectional signal of 100.3 plus an additional signal at 99.1 coming from somewhere off Harris Blvd.

There was a huge effort to bring a translator for WNCW to Charlotte back in the early '90's when there was virtually no alternative/AAA/college radio in the market. This was prior to internet streaming, Sirius XM and when WFAE was playing smooth jazz, WSGE was playing top-40 and WEND was playing beach msic/oldies. While things have changed and more choices have come since, WNCW is still has a loyal following in Western NC, including many in Charlotte who appreciate the clear signals.

This must have been what went down. 100.3 was used and finally went silent for ''awhile''. The Translator for 88.7 eventually moved to 101.3 at some point earlier this year, being noticed earlier by people such as myself.

Earlier today I see the 100.3 Translator is now once again alive -&- well, re-transmitting Audio from 96.1 FM. The Beat.

So... another Charlotte Day -&- another Charlotte Translator....

-Steve.

The good news is that WVBZ is no longer on 100.3. Now it is CHR Kiss you can't hear. The former WFMX is now the rock station and probably harder to pick up then the old WVBZ would have been. Back when this thread began, it was active rock, but then it went through an alternative phase and is now "mainstream", which is a mix of mostly older active rock, classic hard rock and some more wimpy stuff.

That is true, however, 105.7 puts out a very powerful Signal out of the Triad. Whoever put the Tower up in Clemmons knew their stuff. I used to listen to 105.7 when doing contract work up in WS (2015-2016). When coming home, it was always one of the most powerful and could be heard all the way to and even past Statesville, NC. If there was not a 105.7 in Charlotte, you could hear it in Charlotte. But as you said, the music format has changed for 105.7 as well. So that point is now moot. It seems it is getting harder to find a Radio Station these days that has a good variety of material to offer. Steve.

The NWS is on it, I think. Back when WTQR was WSJS-FM it was on there (WXII was formerly WSJS-TV and co-owned with WSJS-AM/FM). They were originally owned by the Winston-Salem Journal Sentinel (WSJS) newspaper.

Also, WSJS was the original builder of what is now WMIT, Black Mountain, with studios in Winston-Salem. The first frequency was in the 40 Mhz FM band, then moved to 97.3 and finally 106.9.

Yes, weather radio is on WXII's tower. Regarding WMIT, it's sad (historically speaking) that WMIT can no longer be heard in W-S as of about 2 months ago. WBLO (Thomasville) is now feeding an FM translator at 106.9, making WMIT virtually un-listenable (especially driving) east of Mocksville.

Seriously? It's a Spanish station. Isn't it?

I have to deal with WIST interference on WBRF driving through High Point.

Noticed yesterday that the Audio being broadcasted had changed. It is now Religious ''Bible-Thumper'' Audio. Today they ID'ed and it's HD2 of 96.1 so no major surprise there at this point. Steve.

The 100.3 translator is actually running "Air 1" which - I believe - is the younger-leaning more uptempo contemporary Christian version of K-Love. Thus, I think Air 1 and K-Love are co-owned.
