W276BH moving into the city on 103.1

Looks like we are getting our first translator with coverage comparable to a Class like like Atlanta and Birmingham have received recently. 250 watts from 300.5 meters in the air.

http://maps.google.com/?q=http://tr...H&freq=103.1&contour=60&city=MEMPHIS&state=TN

App was filed 12/23/2011 to move to the WKNO tower from Byhalia. It also moves to commercial status from non-com with me move.

currently has WKNO listed but I'm sure this will change when it sells to a new owner.

This coverage area of this translator is comparable to the coverage are of WRLT a class A in Franklin TN (Nashville market).

Back when it was in Oxford, I think it relayed MPB and not AFA. It's been off the air since it was relocated/relicensed to Byhalia, with the owners citing poor economic conditions. The translator is owned or being leased by Radio Power, who has translators in Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and Detroit.

The Detroit one is well known. It's the one Clear Channel had been fighting to keep off air because it was supposedly interfering with their Toledo rocker's coverage in the big city.

One thing's for sure, all these translators put on a music format via another station's HD-2, so if it gets put on soon Memphis will be gaining a new signal on FM.

It was owned and operated by AFA before WAVI existed there and was the only AFA signal there other than the signals from Tupelo. This was during the 90s. I guess it changed hands since they no longer needed it after they put WAVI on.

They could sell it, of course. And the change in status is interesting.

Or, they could keep it and translate one of their HD channels. WKNO has wanted a second signal in Memphis for quite some time.

But, you're right. 250W @ 1000' is just 3 dB off a class A.

It really depends on who buys it.

Personally I don't think it will be sold. The people who own it now have leased HD-2s out in other markets to put their own formats on.

Whether or not anyone will let them do that in Memphis remains to be seen. I could also see it going to WVIM to rebroadcast AM 830.

The max power for HD on a 250 watt station is going to be 5 watts. Not likely to work too well.

Radio Power filed a Request for Silent STA for 103.1 yesterday which states "THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE DOES NOT MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE TRANSLATOR TO COVER THE COSTS OF STATION OPERATIONS."

I wonder how well that thing would cover anyway being so close to Jackson 103.1?

Plus, if and when 102.7 has their HD on, 103.1 gets obliterated in NE Shelby County.

Don't read too much into the STA. This is just to avoid having to run the transmitter in Byhalia, which I assume was constructed.

The HD on 102.7 might be an issue, but the signal on this translator will be pretty good. The 60 dBu goes all the way to the River, not bad for a signal that's darn-near free. Sure, there will be mornings that it takes some grief. But it can't be worse than what hits WHAL some mornings -- sometimes it's ALL Little Rock where I live.

I almost forgot about that 103.1 down in Helena. If they turn on the 103.1, they aren't going to be too happy with all of the incoming. I've seen similar circumstances that didn't work out.

I rebuilt that site (KSSN) in the 80's. Huge antenna and halfway to Heaven. It's a blowtorch.

Dear Licensee:
The Media Bureau is investigating potential statutory and rule violations and related
instances of potential misrepresentation and/or lack of candor on the part of Radio Power, Inc.
(the “Licensee”). Specifically, it is alleged that the Licensee abused Commission processes by
effectuating a major change in the facilities of Station W250BN, now licensed to West Allis,
Wisconsin, by a succession of serial minor change applications.

Think they built out 103.1 every time they said they did?

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that they didn't. I've tracked translator moves in Alabama for years now and in some cases I've had the fortune to out and scope the "licensed" site with my own eyes. And never once have I found anything even resembling a temporary setup when these hops were taking place. Since the clampdown, though, some have gone on from poor locations, so maybe that's changing. But going on historical observations, I'd say none of these minor changes ever go on the air.

It's been over 6 months since the initial application for this move. Very little has happened, except for an STA.

Ordinarily, these translator apps go very quickly. I wonder what the hold-up is?
