W279AG-FM/JAX

That's because translators acting as fill-ins can broadcast to the limit of the 2mV contour of the AM station, provided that they don't cause interference to anything else or that their 60dBu does not extend more than 25km in any direction. This is one that approaches a C3 coverage range.

I've put the full set of contours online at:
http://www.broadcastboxes.com/temp/Contours_For_W279AG_CP.jpg

It's pretty impressive. If I were WRUF-FM, I'd get some listeners in the Jax area to complain. Translators are not permitted to interfere with any listeners, even if they listen outside of the 60dBu contour. I'd say there's a good chance that some listeners in the Jax area are going to loose WRUF coverage. Of course, with the format change, they may not have any up there anymore, anyway.

Kyle - According to the map you provided, it appears W279AG will have at least the coverage of a class A FM once it is upgraded. It also appears this translator is re-broadcasting 50kw WJNJ-AM 1320 with decent coverage which should give the licensee a very nice AM-FM signal in and around Jacksonville.

Looks like they are moving to one of the 1,000 ft sticks at the Hogan Road tower farm. I know WJGL, WXXJ and WFYV are all on there, just can't remember which is which.

WJBT recently moved to the WFKS tower across the street as well. Hogan Road is a might popular!

That is a pretty impressive site to see. When I worked in Jax and while the building was still vacant I would often go over and just stare up in awe at those huge sticks.

One of these days I'd like to see WOGK and WMGF.

WOGK's tower is rather impressive, standing at 1,347 feet and situated near Anthony. I was working for, what was then, WMMZ when the present tower was under construction in 1987. I actually touched and examined the top portion of the tower while it was still laying on the ground (as there is no way I will climb a tower that tall).

Regarding WMGF, it stands at just over 1,700 feet at Orange City and shares a panel antenna with WJHM and WOCL. WACX-TV sits at the very top of the tower. WXXL was supposed to move to that tower, as well, with a full C upgrade, but was unable to complete that move due to a short-spacing conflict with WOKV-FM Ponte Vedra Beach. Additionally, the Orange City tower has an elevator inside the tower which takes you straight up to the top.

Translators are getting bigger and stronger but LPFM's are nowhere to be found :(

Well, if there is an opening and an AM operator has the money, it makes sense to help attract a bigger audience and improve night coverage.

Trouble is, especially in a state like FL there seems to be a lot of clutter.

One thing I was thinking about the other day was WEAG in Starke. He seems to do quite well for being in such a small town. Kyle may know this, could WEAG ever be a move in to either Jax or GNV?

I know before WKZY moved to Trenton on 106.9 WEAG had asked and was denied.

WEAG had counter proposed taking the 106.9 frequency to upgrade from 106.3 A to 106.9 C2, and that application was denied as a CP was already in effect for WKZY to upgrade to a C1 on the same 106.9 frequency.

Well, anything is possible, but WKZY currently blocks WEAG. Jim Geason mentioned that he either helped with, or read, a college thesis on WEAG many years ago. What an operation! Was billing something like $20k/mo with no salespeople. All just call-ins and agency buys. Big fish: small pond. Nice living. Why move?

Didn't WRUF-FM file a complaint and get an injunction against this translator shortly after it went on-the-air? I seem to remember a story about the FCC telling them they had to cease operations, but the translator operator basically thumbed his nose and continued to operate.

As it is, 103.7 is a garbled mess on the west side of Jacksonville. The translator operator likely wants the upgrade to eliminate this and "push" WRUF-FM's signal further back to where the interference zone falls outside of the metro. But this move is horribly unfair to WRUF-FM. I can't imagine they'll sit idle for this. Especially with a brand new format they need to promote.

BTW, this is happening all over the country. The big group operators have figured out how to use the new FM translator rules as a loophole to allow another FM in places where they're at the market caps. In Minneapolis, Clear Channel recently fired one up from atop the IDS Tower in downtown Minneapolis. That's over 800 feet. In Des Moines, Saga has one on a TV tower @ 1,000 feet. As a previous poster stated, this is equivalent to a Class A FM with standard facilities of 3kW @ 300 feet.

If true, then WRUF didn't follow-up very well. The FCC will force the translator off the air if WRUF listeners make complaints. WRUF cannot do it by themselves because they have to demonstrate actual interference to at least one bona-fide listener, which the translator owner must be unable to resolve to the listener's satisfaction. Typically, the FCC will allow the translator to try to locate on a new channel before pulling the plug totally.
