ThatGuyOnTheRadio said:Well, if there is an opening and an AM operator has the money, it makes sense to help attract a bigger audience and improve night coverage.
Trouble is, especially in a state like FL there seems to be a lot of clutter.
One thing I was thinking about the other day was WEAG in Starke. He seems to do quite well for being in such a small town. Kyle may know this, could WEAG ever be a move in to either Jax or GNV?
I know before WKZY moved to Trenton on 106.9 WEAG had asked and was denied.
MN Maniac said:Didn't WRUF-FM file a complaint and get an injunction against this translator shortly after it went on-the-air? I seem to remember a story about the FCC telling them they had to cease operations, but the translator operator basically thumbed his nose and continued to operate.
As it is, 103.7 is a garbled mess on the west side of Jacksonville. The translator operator likely wants the upgrade to eliminate this and "push" WRUF-FM's signal further back to where the interference zone falls outside of the metro. But this move is horribly unfair to WRUF-FM. I can't imagine they'll sit idle for this. Especially with a brand new format they need to promote.
BTW, this is happening all over the country. The big group operators have figured out how to use the new FM translator rules as a loophole to allow another FM in places where they're at the market caps. In Minneapolis, Clear Channel recently fired one up from atop the IDS Tower in downtown Minneapolis. That's over 800 feet. In Des Moines, Saga has one on a TV tower @ 1,000 feet. As a previous poster stated, this is equivalent to a Class A FM with standard facilities of 3kW @ 300 feet.
