W292DV wants to Move to 104.7

The newest application is out for translator W292DV. The applicant asks for a waiver of the commission's rules to allow it to move to 104.7, which would ordinarily be a major change not allowed outside of a filing window. In its request for the waiver, the applicant claims that it provides a vital public service by rebroadcasting the HD2 sub-channel of WLTW, as HD receivers are not prevalent or affordable to the majority of listeners. They also argue that exposure to an HD2 sub channel via a translator will increase exposure to HD Radio and increase sales of receivers, thus helping to further the cause of the FCC.

See, they're just trying to help! (/sarcasm)

Wonder if WSPK will raise objections to the translator being on the 104.7 frequency? New York City is still within the 36 dBu contour at least according to radio-locator...

This time the application for 104.7 FM from Apple 107.1 Inc. calls for 70 watts output, instead of the 99 previously authorized for 106.3.
The translator on 106.3 was evidently difficult to receive in most places during the short time it was on the air, based on reports that appeared on this board, and elsewhere. So 70 watts from the same location may provide an even more limited signal.
The application acknowledges they have a "High hurdle" to overcome in getting a change like this approved by the F.C.C. Perhaps they feel at this point they have little to lose by giving it a try.
If the change is approved, I hope that WLTW HD2 does not once again drop the Country Road rebroadcast it has been airing. It is the closest thing New York has to a real country station. I have become quite fond of it.

Never mind that the 54dBu of WSPK goes through Englewood, NJ. Only a couple miles from the GWB and line of sight to 4 Times Square.

Even though Bergen county isn't their focus, 104.7 comes in quite well, even on a boombox in northeastern Bergen.

If the FCC does this, it will open up a can of worms everywhere. My bet is that this thing is dead in the water.

I'm sure all the Pirates on 104.7 are watching this closely ;)

I think if someone could have stuck something on 104.7 by now (legally), they would have. The FCC has raided pirates on it in the past in the city at SPK's pushing a few years ago. As everyone else points out, contour is way to close and pretty much overlaps. I'd be very very surprised if it happens. Probably a case of throwing something at the wall to see if it sticks, should be DOA, especially since WSPK will likely object.

With such limited power you'd have to wonder why they would even bother.

Limited power, yes, but I would take 70 watts in NYC over 7,000 in Boise, Idaho. That's a bad frequency choice, but look at how many people are in the 54dBu of 103.1 in Fort Lee. More than some class C's out west.

According to Radio Insight, the application to the F.C.C. for a translator move from 106.3 to 104.7 proposes a null in the direction of WSPK. But even that along with the lower power level may not be enough to satisfy WSPK's owner if they have listeners within the area that would be covered by the translator.
I wonder how they manage to shoehorn translators into other major cities, such as Atlanta.

Ironically I was listening to SPK on the Belt Parkway today, they really do have some reach.

Well, there's a translator that's simulcasting WWFM in Central Jersey where you can also pick up K104 and that was approved.

13W contour adjacent...

Unlike in Pittsburgh, where the Pirates there are actually leaving 104.7 FM. :p
