WAAF needs to go Hot Talk for guys

WAAF needs to drop the Rock. WHPT in Tampa dropped the Rock and they're now all guy talk ( similar to BCN when they were FREE-FM). WHPT is now the # 1 talk station with a 5.2 12+ since dropping rock for all talk, and # 1 in all male demos. They are destroying right wing talk on CC's WFLA. Look for this to be a new alternative talk format around the country.

How'd that work out for WBCN? We should go ask them.

OH WAIT! WE CAN'T!

I'm tired of hearing that AAF should drop rock. They're a gem in New England. They're financially solid and programming-wise while not perfect, they're a hell of a lot better than the alternatives in the region.

Tampa is not Boston. What works there doesn't mean it will anyplace else. That attitude has cost more than one operator serious money.

As long as WAAF continues to make money, it will remain the rock format it is.

Hot talk or ANY type of talk other than just pulling crap down off the bird is expensive to run. Think about it for a second. A midday "show" right now on WAAF consists of: 1 live person in the room, pushing the buttons and talking. A midday show on the all new and shiny but still signal hampered WAAF would be: 2 hosts (more than likely), a producer/engineer and a call screener. Now we're up to 4 people where before there was 1. And guess what? Stan Dup and Sid Down in the afternoon are coming in at 3, with their two salaries, their producer, maybe even a writer too...

It's a format that's like having 3 or 4 morning shows to pay for.

WBCN never went Free FM, though it certainly was rumored when CBS went in that direction with all those other stations.

I have an idea, why not put all crappy and already failed formats on in Boston.
It didn't work elsewhere so let's have it NOT WORK HERE!!

Doesn't Entercom run what it has called a "guy talk" format already, on WEEI?

Wouldn't the company have blown up WAAF instead of the money-printing Mike if guy talk outside of sports was viable?

Isn't it true that both chains with sports stations in towns have other stations in the market with solid male numbers?

It's about selling. Owning a demographic is a big part of selling in the audience-fragmented world of radio.

With DLR, O&A etc BCN sure sounded a lot like WFNY, WYSP...

The Lovelines 9-11PM sure sounds ominous. That show has always been a vagabond clunker. Now they see fit to block program a rocker with that 2 hour talk show in prime time. This is how it starts, boys and girls!

Hot talk has always worked in Florida for some reason, but not anywhere else. Talk is an expensive format to run if you're doing it locally. That's why Talk1200 blew out their local people. WAAF has a heritage morning show that happens to talk a lot. If they deliver ratings, that's great. But, that doesn't mean the audience wants to hear an all day talky morning show format. As was mentioned earlier, CBS tried it, with proven personalities like Howard Stern and O&A...and it didn't work.

With WBCN going away a few years ago, WAAF essentially has rock all to themselves. WBOS is essentially a gold based alternative that leans more pop than rock, and then you have WZLX's dinosaur rock. That's about it. Considering Hillman is the only major expense on the station, it makes all sorts of sense for WAAF to continue on the same path it's been on the last 40 years. Keep on rockin'.

But KROQ and 91X have been doing Lovelines for nearly 20 years.
Stop being an idiot

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN TALK ::) MAN FM 97.7 and 107.3

A failed format tried in other cities. You can have Hillman in the morning with the morning hole reading the news...followed by MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN Cow Muller in the mid-day...then Jeff Katz in the afternoon...followed by a replay of Glenn Beck during the evening...Leave the room ladies...The men are going to do sum talkin' ::)

Loveline (singular) is a KROQ show emanating from their studios before moving to Westwood One. They run it 10 to midnight it's their local show. Loveline also works on the west coast where it runs live, it has never worked east no matter what format it was on because of the delay which was often next day. The guests are also very kroq centric which did not help east coast stations either. i remember the first time around that WAAF ran it and Sum 41 and Blink 182 were guests on one show, it was very non AAF for many reasons. Now it's been dropped by dial global which used to be Westwood one it's fallen even further off the radar. Strange move putting it back on AAF now even without a previous jock on at night.
