WAAF vs. 98.5 the real story....

all focus is on the fall(down) of WEEI but what is NOT written about is how bad 98.5 is crushing the WAAF morning show with Greg Hill. ****-man or Hillman(whatever) is the most over-rated no talent ever in Boston morning radio. Hill is on FM, yet he is getting crushed by 98.5 the hub. Toucher and Rich have kicked the ass of WAAF and Greg Hill. Period. D&C have a real morning show, but WAAF is over.

Without seeing some numbers for Men 25-54 in the 6a-10a daypart, I can't believe that T&R is 'crushing' the Hillman morning show .. so, let's see some numbers. Put up or shut up.

Radio-Info does not allow the posting of "numbers" so you will not see them here. And I can back up what has been posted. In men 25-54 T&R are "crushing" Hillman. The margin with men 18-49 is even larger.

I have access to the PPM software from Arbitron, and I can back that up. Not sure I'd call a 2.6-share-point difference (M 25-54) "crushing," but it's pretty significant nevertheless.

IMO most of Hillman's shtick really belongs on WRKO. If you're going to do political talk, why do it on a station known for music?

I'll throw that one back to you. I've seen a few minutes here and there of WEEI's D&C on NESN. TO me it seems like a Political Talk show. - Why do Political Talk on an all-sports station?

It goes back to how Imus, etc., would do political talk in morning (on WEEI, later grabbed by 96.9
when EEI decided not to renew--for a short time 96.9 was actually "Imus in the morning, smooth jazz all day", till they went fully into talk). It would bring in an audience that may not necessarily be interested in sports, or at least they're not as "into it" as most EEI listeners are. They figure we do sports talk most of the time but for morning drive, let's add some other things in. And many middle
aged guys tend to be at least partially conservative, the type who'd listen to Howie Carr (like me!)
Could you imagine EEI putting on hosts who would espouse political views like those of
Jeff Santos?

They figure if you're not of their political ilk, you can always try NPR or WWZN. And up until last year they didn't have any real competition in sports talk radio. Along came 98.5. Now of course 98.5 may be trying to get a younger audience, and politically they may be more liberal or moderate--I don't
know how often T&R get into politics, but certainly they are an alternative should John and Gerry
displease you. (If you have a sat. radio or live near a station that carries ESPN more often
than WEEI does, maybe their morning show--Mike and Mike?--could be another alternative.)

Some people who had the idea that EEI could move to 107.3/97.7 suggested that Hill could
move to the RKO morning show. And while it may be true that AAF is getting crushed in
ratings for morning show maybe it's also been said AAF is making money otherwise, but I'm
getting off the subject.

For that morning drive audience, Wolfe figures people might want some political talk mixed in
with the sports talk--even though he already has pol. talk just down the aisle from EEI
in the RKO studios (Tom and Todd; competing against himself?)

The ratings and billing must be such that Wolfe prefers to continue with D&C and their
current format. btw a couple yrs ago their contracts were expiring and they almost were
heading to perhaps a "sports talk network" Nassau was putting together but after some kind
of lockout Wolfe brought them back in and squashed any potential "sports talk network"
for Nassau (Sports Talk 99.5? Remember?)

>>"D&C" headed to WCRB?
David Scott reports that “Dennis & Callahan” may be headed for classical station WCRB (99.5 FM), which could become the hub of a regional sports network. He rounds up Globe and Herald coverage as well.

Further memories from the not too distant past: First Entercom agreed to a deal in which they would own half of WCRB with Nassau and Nassau would syndicate WEEI on as many as 11 stations throughout New England (late 2007). Then in early 2008 it fell apart. As Rodney Dangerfield once put it, "I bought some quicksand, the deal fell through!"

http://www.fybush.com/NERW/2008/080107/nerw.html

>>In August (07), WEEI faced what could have been a serious challenge to its sports supremacy: while Entercom had locked up a long-term Red Sox contract, at no small expense, its morning stars John Dennis and Gerry Callahan were flirting with other suitors - not just the long-rumored Greater Media dream of flipping WBOS (92.9) to an all-sports format, but also a possible Nassau flip of WCRB to sports.
===============
D&C wound up back with Entercom soon afterward, once Entercom had a poss. deal that would
give them half of CRB (still classical) and EEI being simulcast on stations in Concord and
Meredith NH, etc. But it all fell apart.

Imagine what would have happened had either a) Greater signed D&C to "sports talk 92.9 WBOS"
or b) Nassau signed D&C to "sports talk WCRB". Roll over Beethoven.

What a tangled web we weave here... "What ifs" (Another: what if Entercom hadn't grabbed
the variety hits format for Mike 93.7? CBS could well have done variety hits on WODS...)

Isn't that what Imus did on WFAN?

Pretty much; of course he left WFAN after a scandal in 2007. He had been on WNBC which became 'FAN
and stayed after the sports talk station at 1050 moved down to 660:

>>Imus in the Morning remained at 660 AM among WFAN's sports programs with his music and comedy bits as the staples of the program and the beginnings of a political forum.

Imus moved to WABC in Dec of 07. WTKK picked it up. Ironically enough had the deal for Carr
been allowed, they would have had Howie in morning but since Howie was unavailable the I-man
came in handy. (Earlier in the year, around Feb of 07 IIRC, Howie--whose Florida condo was
supposedly financed by an out of court settlement v. Imus--made fun of the situation and
referred to 96.9 as "WTKKK". A few months later Howie announced he was MOVING to WTKK!
I remember getting home from a trip to Pittsburgh in either late June or early July and the hot story was that Carr was moving to FM after his WRKO deal was to expire.

Did not come to pass, and again, TKK wound up filling mornings with the man who moved his
own base of operations from 660 to 770...

Toucher and Rich don't do all sports on their show, either, but eschew the politics. I haven't listened to D&C in a long time but T&R's show is more lighthearted than I remember D&C ever being. Some of the comedy, even the sports-oriented bits, is hit and miss and puerile but, to be honest, you sometimes need that in the morning.
