WABB afraid of the "phunk"?

Allow me to nitpick, if you will:

WYOK "Hot 104" has the Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk With My Heart".
"97-5" WABB, however, has the BEP version titled/sung "Don't Mess With My Heart".

Not that it matters, but why bother with the edit?

This isn't the first time WABB has used a creatively-edited version of a song. Just yesterday, they spun "C'mon N'Ride It (The Train)" by Quad City DJs without any of the rap verses. (The same version was played years ago when the song was first popular).

And in the song "It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy, "love on the bathroom floor" replaces "bangin' on the bathroom floor".
______________

More conservative ownership, I'd guess. . . No B'ham station plays the "Phunk" version either, as far as I know . . .

Y101 in Jackson also plays the "mess" version. But this is the same station that edits the Maroon 5 song "This Love" on the part where it says "keep her coming every night". They edit "coming". The New South stations try to make themselves to be family-friendly stations.
______________

Unless I'm hearing the song wrong, that lyric in "This Love" isn't a sexual reference....is it?
______________

depends on how you look at at it? it could be sexual or could mean trust and loyalty in the relationship.
______________

It's a double-entendre, meant to be taken both ways, IMO.

That reminds me of the first station I worked at. The GM took it upon himself to ban (not just edit, ban) the song "Maneater" by Hall and Oates (when it was a current) because he was convinced the title was a reference to oral sex. I don't even know how he ever got that idea? Often times the people doing the censorship have dirtier minds than the artists ever would.

First of all, folks... the RECORD label put out the "mess" version. Secondly, sit in a studio and answer the request lines when, each time you play the song, you get irate moms who think they're saying "F@CK" instead of "phunk." They won't hear your reasoning in their anger and disgust, trust me.

The record label putt he "mess" version out, I'm SURE, because they realized a LOT of stations wouldn't play the song without a cleaner-sounding word in it's title and chorus.

I was there when "It Wasn't Me" was added, and I highly doubt that Bernie Dittman had any part in the decision-making process. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain that programming just found "banging on the bathroom floor" to be a bit too racy for the market.

Ya'll gotta understand, before this whole "let's be a young-leaning-CHR" phase that WABB's gone towards, they were more interested in 25-34 and 25-54 numbers, aka their "heritage" audience.

And at KQID (Alexandria, La), we play the "mess" version, too. This is the conservative south.

I think most of us already knew that. The stations here in the area are fairly good, but they aren't THAT good...:)

Nothing to disagree with here.

I'm not sure about your conclusion that it was "too racy for the market", as WBLX-FM (yes, different format/target audience) used the "bangin" edit. But noting WABB's focus at the time, it's choice is more understandable.

But not so conservative enough prevent them from adding crunk/hop like Gucci Mane ('BLX's territory)--and yet, continue play the rapless version of "C'mon and Ride It".

Like I said before, none of this crap even really matters--I just found it kinda odd.

As a former Hot 104 jock, it would disappoint me hugely to see WYOK go country, but as someone that knows how Cumulus works, knows how little faith Gary Pizzati has in the CHR format on that stick, and knows of something else that was done recently in that building, it would not surprise me to see a flip.

If you're a jock at WYOK, I'd have a solid aircheck ready to go out...
______________

I don't find it odd, at all. It'd be nice to see somebody install a small 'filter' when it comes to the envelope-pushing lyrics et al, anyhow. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about limiting a person's right to free speech, but from a programming point of view, it's hard to net the female 18-34 and 25-54 with 'Candy Shop-like' lyrics and innuendo in the format's top ten rotation.

I think a lot of that's largely induced by a single corporate entity, with their grip on many of the stations carrying the Pop/Top 40 format, though.

WYOK going country?? Sorry, I'm not buying that one. They were making great strides before Ivan did in the stick. Cumulus isn't gonna pull the plug on this one yet.

The reason Pizzati has trouble with the CHR format is that he's an old mullet-hair styled rock jock who's been brainwashed like Katie Holmes to Scientology. That first sales management gig that blew him a six-figure income had him sold on more sales/less programming. And ya gotta have interaction and street presence and a full staff to win in CHR. He's in a market where a heritage station's been there, will be there when he finally blows outta town, and will always be a force in the market. That heritage station doesn't do national contests or rely on Atlanta for shot-calling on music.

His best efforts at running WYOK in Mobile have failed to topple 'ABB. And using the towe collapse as an excuse is weak. Pizzati's never allowed for anybody to use excuses in his cut-throat style of management, so why should he be cut any slack, either?

Ron is exactly right. As a former programmer of WYOK (guess who?!) I can tell you this one is over. The hurricane, and most importantly the decisions made after the hurricane by Gary Pizzati, Jan Jeffries, and John Dickey, are what did HOT 104 in. The station had a real shot last summer, but that was all ended by short-sighted management and strong-armed ignorance from Atlanta.

These guys have had a success in Nashville with the Wolf, only because they actually allowed a programmer (John Sebastian) to do it HIS way without interference from Atlanta. You think maybe they'd learn a lesson from that (HELLO John Dickey?) In a company where the grass is always greener, HOT 104's lawn is looking brown, spotty, and dead. Expect the change in the next 30 days.
