WABB SOLD!

Don;t forget that Mobile has long been served by Pensacola Christian College's "Rejoice Radio" nationwide network's parent station, 100KW WPCS 89.5.

Not to be disrespectful of the work people have done there but if people have to be reminded that they are there, have they really been serving Mobile at all?

I don't think Rejoice Radio serves anyone. During Hurricane Ivan they kept playing their regular programming with no weather alerts or updates what-so-ever... even after the other stations dropped off the air one by one. But when talking about the religious networks covering Alabama... Rejoice Radio is one of the larger religious networks in the US and the parent station is on one of the Baldwin County Alabama tall towers.

Another Christian network that has a strong presence here in Alabama is Tupelo Mississippi based American Family Radio.

They have stations here in Selma, Troy, Ozark, Carrolton/Tuscaloosa area and two full powered stations that cover Mobile from the state of Mississippi.

This network has been expanding their reach for many years, as well.

P.S. And yes I'm so glad that this new K-Love station will be well outside my reach.  If I was living in the Mobile area, I wouldn't listen to them anyway.  My musical tastes are far more eclectic than theirs ever will be.

Are you saying they're to Christian music what Clear Channel and Cumulus are to secular music? ;)

Does Clear Channel now own a majority of EMF because K-Love/Air 1 is now on my iHeart Radio app...?

From what someone else told me, in another part of this site, their playlist is very dull. (WPHA Mr. Willie)

They tend to play the same old songs every other hour.

Personally that would bore me to death.

Gotta have some variety in my music.

Hence the reason why I have no interest for them.

Tremendous false alarm, thanks to the old GE personal radio I was first using before jumping into my car and listening to its stereo. Inside, I perked up from my computer screen, swearing I heard a liner for 107.3 Hit Music Now and new music--a simulcast on 97.5 before WABB's midnight signoff? What the...who saw that coming?

It would have been a true suprise if it had been real. What I think I actually heard was a DX catch of the all new 97.3 Hit Music Now, a.k.a. the 100kW WGEX-FM of Bainbridge, GA. Gotta love analog radio tuning. ::)

97.3 from Bainbridge, then WJAD, was a very common catch over here back when the dial wasn't so crowded. I don't think I've heard Bainbridge in Pensacola since before 1990. Before 1990 driving to Tallahassee, once I got to DeFuniak Springs I would loose Mobile and Pensacola stations and either change the channel to WPFM or WJAD.

Useless trivia: WJAD used to be WMGR, "Marvin Griffin Radio", co-owned with WMGR 930 AM and the Bainbridge Post Searchlight newspaper. I knew Governor Griffin, yep, former governor of the great stat of Georgia, I even have one of his custom made hats that he lost at a dove shoot.

Some press about WABB's exit:

Press-Register: "WABB-FM's graceful exit certainly beat 'Radio Macarena' "

Nice tribute from a Mobile-area blogger, link tweeted by that 'Insight' site: "WABB, 97.5 FM; The End of an Era"

And on FormatChange.com's Facebook page, "one of the greatest radio station farewells ever produced".

Anyone remember the classic CHR battle between 2 big signal stations in Mobile? WABB-FM & G-100. Chris Hall & David Page vs. Dick Hylton & Les (I can't remember his name...the news guy), Paul Fuller vs. Scott O'Brien, Leslie Fram vs. Charlie Ocean, Tim Livingston vs. Amy, Steve Scott vs. Randy Rose. I worked at both stations in 1983-84, which was an exciting time to be in radio.

I'll bet Mr. Dittman is rolling in his grave about his family selling WABB to a Company

I doubt he is much concerned with that, anymore. Things of this life probably don't have any value or importance on the "other side". Obviously, we can't ask him, but I believe he would just be content in knowing his wife and family were taken care of, and that they are happy, amidst what party WABB-FM was sold. Isn't that what each one of us would want to be rest assured of before our time is up here...that our loved ones have whatever they need to go on living?

Someone mentioned that the company which owns WZEW offered much more money for WABB-FM, but the offer was refused. I just wonder why that would be the case. I'm not saying that information isn't factual...just curious. I haven't ever heard anyone mention as to whether the Dittman family were Christians or not (or "religious", if you will)....maybe that was the reason as to why the station was sold to EMF rather than someone else whose offer involved much more money. Or was it just a case that the family didn't want to sell to a secular broadcaster because of Bernie Dittman's dislike of them? The family could have rationed that, by selling WABB-FM to a "religious" organization such as EMF, his legacy would not be tampered with or allowed to be used by a secular company for merely profit. The difference in offers (according to the poster) was more tham $1M. That's a huge chunk of change.

If the terms of the deal that the trades are reporting are correct, the seller doesn't have to hold the note for awhile. That might make all the difference.

1. The Dittmans are Jewish.

2. Maybe WZEW, owned by former WABB employee Tim Camp, wasn't financially qualified. The best offer doesn't always equate to best buyer.

Passtheword, I can ASSURE you...Bernie set his family up long ago. And...yeah, he'd be f-ing pissed. Trust me.

But I do believe you are correct as to the impetus for selling to EMF....they'll be far less likely to resell it when the Dickeys come waving a check at them....they're about mission first, money second....I think that played a huge part in it...and it's the one part I can see at least some logic in.

What will happen to all the WABB equipment & building??
Does EMF own that as well.

Also why wouldn't EMF put their CHR Air1 steam on 97.5 when WABB was a CHR too?
That way they might have been able to at least keep 0.1% of the current audience.

Keep in mind also that, sometimes, people would rather their businesses die than let someone run them who wouldn't have the same level of passion. On one hand, it's hard to believe a former WABB employee wouldn't run it in a way the Dittmans would approve, but I could also see them wondering about his financial situation and how well he could do in the real world.
