It all depends on where the unit is located in the audio chain. Most stations in my experience stream a post delay feed that mirrors the air feed. The pre-delay is fed to the caller, program -ob-hold and studio monitors.
That's funny - one of the stations in the group I'm currently employed at actually has an old Moseley STL on the workbench out in one of the transmitter shacks. Now I know a bit more about it! It's ironic that 30 years ago, WABC had one of the shortest delays of any station at 3.5 seconds.
30 years ago you had board operators that were QUICK and on the ball. Nowadays you're lucky if you can get them to look up from their cellphones long enough to check the meters!
Remember WFAN of 30 years ago? Not a split second of dead air between elements was allowed.
WABC’s on air delay has returned to about 30-35 seconds as of the past day or so. So now their “news before the hour” actually airs before the hour.
