WABC-770 To Dump Commercials Between 5 And 7 A.M. On Weekdays For Several Weeks

Radio and Records.com is reporting that WABC-770 will not broadcast commercials on weekday morning between 5 and 7 A.M. starting January 3rd for an undetermined length of time (but possibly until March).

The article reports that WABC is making this move to try to attract new listeners to their "Curtis and Kuby" morning show who used to be fans of Howard Stern.

But if my memory serves me correct, "Curtis and Kuby" attract a much older demographic than Stern does. Also, I thought Stern's Sirius satellite show will have commercials in it.

The real reason appears to be to allow WABC to better compete against all-news WCBS-880 and WINS-1010.

what about Network inventory?

The network inventory has to be cleared during drive. Is WABC going to
clear them between 8 and 9?

Re: Totally Commercial-Free?

Last time WABC promised "Commercial Free" Curtis read live copy. They really meant we wouldn't hear recorded spots.

Where will Howard's fans go?

It couldn't be that they are afraid of WLIB's new early AM drive power house Mark Reilly, could it? Interesting they will still be running spots opposite Rachel Maddow?

Seriously, I don't think C&K are likely to appeal to Howard's fans. If anybody has a shot at picking up his audience it would be the I-man.
