WABC AM can pick up the ball

Hot on the heels of "Rewound", WABC AM should devote the weekends to 'summer gold' ,60s and 70s, and they can get harry harrison, dan ingram and cousin brucie morrow to do it.

And throw away the millions they bill on weekends, too?

With WCBS-FM switching to Jack, one wonders if Oldies fans would listen to an AM station that provided a 24-7 Oldies format? For an AM to do such a format, it would have to have a good daytime/nighttime pattern with a minimum of 5kW and good, clean audio processing. Is there any chance of a NYC Metro AM making such a move?

It doesn't seem practical or realistic for any of the established AM players in NYC to make such a move, but are there other AM's that would want to make such a move?

I realize this is a flashback, but many of us remember when WWDJ (97 DJ) and WNBC took a (ill-fated) run at WABC. Of course, guys like me remember the Golden Era when WABC, WMCA and WINS fought it out, but those days are so long gone they seem like memories from the paleolithic era.

And, uh, just to give readers a chronographic idea of where this particular Buffalo guy stands, I can recall my older sibblings listening to Big BMR, Murray The K, HOA, Cousin Brucie, Klaven & Finch and others when I lived in NJ, even though I'm in the demo that listened to Allison and Scott on WNEW-FM.

Yeah, I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

Allan Sniffen, on his board, just made the suggestion of having Cousin Brucie do Saturday nights on WABC 770.

And I think it just might work! I mean, you have the radio nostalgia buffs tuning in as well as oldies fans. Plus you would have people like me who were young enough to listen to WABC back then but don't tune in now. I bet WABC gets its highest billings due to the rewounds. So by having him on Saturday Nights (or rotate it around with Dan Ingram, Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy, Johnny Donovan, etc.) would make sense.

Now that is an excellant idea!

WABC Rewound weekends

I'd love to hear the legends back on their original flagship station on Saturday & Sundays...now that would be a real treat!

With all due respect, Rewound is NOT getting WABC its highest billings. Its consistent news/talk format is. And I say that as one who really enjoys listening to Rewound every year. It is radio that way it was when I got my first job in radio 30 years ago.

That said, I am confident there are lots of under performing AM signals in New York City that can pick up the slack. . .if they have the will.

I guess it wasn't such a bad idea, after all, huh?(the first print interview I ever did, in 1970,while in high school, was for Rock Magazine, with Cousin Brucie Morrow; I wanted to do an AM vs. FM interview, with Morrow and Scott Muni but Scottso, God bless him, thought I wanted to pit them against each other, and bailed out.
I had the honor of visting WABC while Bruce was on the air, and got to meet Rick("We're in the RADIO business, NOT the RECORD business!") Sklar,a high light for me.)
The past is thefuture.,bring it back to AM; the new breed of kids are busy with their i pods and playing X Box games all day ANYWAY!
