WABC dropping "Coast to Coast AM" for infomercials

"It's one night a week, (overnights Friday into Saturday) and the colon cleaners take to the air then. Another hour of paid programming 5-6 a.m. Sunday." [/quote]

I love those colon blow infomercials! Who whould've thought that when John Wayne died, he had inside him 42 pounds of undigested fecal matter! You surely do learn something new every day! ;D

I think I can sum it up in a very short statement...
One dollar and ninety six cents a share.

Just scan the AM dial at night on Fridays and you'll be sure to find at least two more stations playing Coast to Coast. I'll help out:

810 WGY Albany
1080 WTIC Hartford
1180 WHAM Rochester
1210 WPHT Philadelphia

And I believe they all stream online. Or you could get an XM Radio and listen on channel 165, or go all out and get a c-band dish and catch 4 hours a day plus 7 more hours of re-feeds.

Yes...the defibrillator, heart monitor, iron lung, etc. are in the hundreds of thousands.

I just took a look at "The Mecca" to see what they are saying about this.

They are saying nothing. The topic is not up.

Either the regulars over there missed this (not likely since a lot of them come here).

Or Doctor Sniffles will not allow this topic to be posted and discussed. Maybe the thought of all night infomercials on his beloved "Musicradio" was just too much to handle and he had to retire to his office for some laughing gas.

Infomercials make quick money, oldies (and any other music they'd air) would not.

Unless, of course, RJ Ron Joseph does an oldies show! ;)

John Rook claims:
Mirroring the Texas based Mays mess by desperately

grabbing dollars from any source, Captain Suleman

has ordered the once proud flagship, WABC in New

York, to program non-stop info commercials

beginning at midnight and continuing til’ dawn.

You people are the single most gullible, easily taken to the cleaners....group of people I have EVER run across. My God you are SO child-like. Every one of you who posted and piled on to this thread should be ashamed of yourself. Every one of you owes me and WABC an apology.

I do not know John Rook except that maybe he used to program WLS back in the rock days over 20 years ago. Now he might as well be rocking in the home, for all I know. But this is what has happened to the internet. Somebody with a computer and 25 minutes to kill can create his own blog and POOOOF. He is an expert.

You people know that I do occasionally post on this board. But except for one poster who suggested you wait till I could weigh in....you people were all so quick to believe ANYTHING negative about WABC and Citadel. It's like a group of you sit around in a cave somewhere, rubbing your hands over an open flame, lamenting how horrible my company is and predicting all manner of evil things to happen. When somebody says something like the comment above....all reason and rationality is thrown out the window and you people chomp down on it like starving wolves.

Let me just say this as clearly as I can. The statement above by John Rook is a 100% complete fabrication. This never happened. There has never been a conversation about it. Farid has a lot more important things to worry about than playing infomercials in the overnight on WABC.

I want to ask everyone of you who posted here to stop the next time something wild and wacky like this is posted about my station. Just wait till I can get here to correct it. I never lie. And I have no reason to. If we were doing it, I would tell you. But please wait before you believe every cocka-mamy blog out there that might say something crazy or wacky or horrible and ask yourself one question: Does this make sense? If it doesn't then it probably is not true.

Now excuse me while I go back to my real job of running this wacky radio station...rather than trying to correct bizarre predictions on a message board by losers who haven't held down a job in this business for years.

Well, I guess that's that...the man has spoken!

Have to agree Phil...too many self-proclaimed experts on just about every topic you can think of on the INTERNET! Come on folks...as Phil suggested, think for yourself!

Thinking for yourself also means not taking everything Phil (or anyone else) says at face value - or at gospel. ("The man has spoken!" That's your idea of thinking for yourself?)

PDs do lie. PDs do spin. PDs do Clinton-esque evasions, half-truths and semi-truths. PDs deny something is going to happen right up until they do it. And PDs go into attack mode without making straight-forward statements about a given issue (political talk radio has learned from the politicians).

John Rook is hardly a "self-proclaimed expert." He was a highly successful PD and became a consultant with a website to promote his practice. Don't be surprised if/when Phil becomes a consultant and sets up a website, too.

Darn right! Think for yourself.

Please...have you looked at his bio on the web site?? Can you say bizarre???

So, I assume from your post that you are calling Phil a liar...or are you speaking in the abstract when you say, "PDs do lie, PDs do spin"?

Come on...if you are comparing Phil's credentials on what's happening at WABC vrs Mr. Rook, then I think Phil wins. Why always so happy to think the worst of people and companies? Please, don't bother giving me chapter and verse about why...sorry I asked!

I'm glad you asked.

Yes, I am talking about PDs.

I once heard a saying I like: You can trust people to be the way they are.

If I go buy a car, I don't trust the salesman to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I trust him to try to sell me car.

I trust Phil to be a PD. Part of his job to keep the cat from getting out of the bag, a tough job in an industry very prone to leaks and rumors.

If you follow politics, you know sometimes things get leaked. There is a strong and unfavorable reaction and politicians back down and don't do what they started out to do. Often, someone in a political camp disagrees with a decision and leaks something in hopes of getting this kind of unfavorable reaction.

If the discussions on this board cause Phil (or Farid) to have second thoughts about more brokered time on WABC, then that's what public debate and discussion is supposed to do. If that turned out to be the case, I don't expect anyone on the inside to say so.

Maybe experience teaches people to think the worst. At the very least, you're never disappointed.

"Everybody lies." - Gregory House, MD

John Rook was PD of two ABC owned stations that achieved legendary status. KQV, Pittsburgh. WLS, Chicago. Top 40 WLS dominated Chicago radio for much of two decades. At night, it dominated radio throughout much of the Midwest. Rook came to Chicago when WLS faced an extremely strong challenge from another iconic Top 40 station, WCFL (The Voice of Labor) and put WLS back on top against very strong competition. He nurtured the careers of some great talents. If you insist on comparing credentials, I wouldn't be so quick to pick a winner.

Re: WABC dropping "Coast to Coast AM" for infomercials/NOT TRUE

From a VERY reliable source, WABC is NOT dropping Coast to Coast its weeknight talk show with George Nory (spelling).

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Infomercials for mythical health remedies and financial schemes or a radio show about mythical alien abductions and ghosts?

Sounds like a wash. The brain-dead lemmings that would listen to Coast to Coast will probably actually BUY some of this infomercial crap. It's a win-win.

Once again, let's not let mere facts (as described very early on) get in the way of speculation, conjecture and rumor.

I do believe, firmly, that Mr. Rook (and the accompanying headline) was taken a tad out of context. If Mr. Rook, in fact, listened to WABC in the wee hours of Saturday morning, what would he have heard? That's correct ... colon blow programming. If he had listened, say, on Wednesday morning, what would he have heard? Coast to Coast with George Noory. As for speculation of an order from on high, well, Phil's right. Anyone can be an expert in blogosphere cyberland.

Just like us.

The trivial ... blown way out of proportion...for now.

Tin foil hats, every one!

All I can say is WOW!!

Lets take the word of a man who "programed" WLS a hundred years ago over the man who programs WABC today! Hell, we might as well conduct a séance and see what Rick Sklar has to say!!

You remind me of a gentleman who I knew in 1978 who worked at WOR and loved to say he worked at, "Formerly one of Americans Great Radio Stations"....

Julius...[EDIT-inflammatory]

Unlike you, who posts here with an assumed name and claims to know something about radio, I post as me using my real name. So if you lie and make stuff up like you have done here repeatedly, nobody can nail you. You just disappear. I can't disappear. You have never caught me lying here and I resent the implication that I ever would, based merely on your past experience. [EDIT-inflammatory]

Unlike John Rook who may have programmed a decent radio station 20 years ago, I program a decent one today...and another decent one before this one. Rook is just completely out of it....lost in space...making things up because he can. He has no knowledge of what is going on. Do you get it now. He makes this ------ up. If he ever did have credibility, he has none now. I would like to get a list of what stations he really "consults." I doubt if there is even one.

What Rook posted was pathetic. The fact that Julius actually defends it and believes him instead of me is more than pathetic. Hopeless comes to mind.

Where is John Rook by the way? [EDIT-inflammatory]

pb

Aw Phil....that was kind of like when someone hits the dump button and the listener is just left wondering, "What he say???" Would really like to know what [edit-inflammatory] was!

You have a right to be pissed...your name was besmirched because a "consultant" said something that made certain people happy and YOU told the truth which messed up certain folks fantasy!

Bobby: It is a little disturbing that people can come on this board and post something that is completely 100% false about my station and have that thread title show up on the rotator on the left hand side as if it is true...but when I make a joke about what John Rook was really doing the moment he made that prediction, it gets removed for being too inflammatory. I am not suggesting that this thread be removed, but this entire thread is inflammatory. What I said about Rook was apparently too close to reality.

pb

I have, on very good authority, that the poop is about to hit the fan.

Watch this space.
