WABC Fires Joe Crummey

This per Allan Sniffen at the New York Radio Message Board, who goes to predict that Geraldo Rivera, of all people, will replace him. (Prediction: If Geraldo's the guy, expect that daypart to be syndicated, just like the rest of WABC's broadcast day; Geraldo is a nationally known name - not only did he have a daily television talk show, but he currently hosts the weekend program "Geraldo At Large" on Fox News Channel.)

Crummey was one of the few local hires at WABC under Laurie Cantillo's watch.

I wanted to like the show but Joe and is staff are far too much establishment shills, cheerleaders and clueless on issues beyond the media sound bites to make for any kind of enjoyable listening. I also really could not stand that dopey female sidekick of his. I could not listen to the fill-in hosts because she would still be on and is so politically inept on issues.

Now, look... If you want to argue that Patti Steele is "clueless" when it comes to politics, that's your right. Does it sound a little weird hearing her in that form after hearing her on "hit radio" for many years in New York City? Of course it does, but we can't criticize her for giving it a try. That being said, I wouldn't go so far as calling her "dopey." She probably has more radio experience than many of the regulars on this board (myself included)!

By the way, I was on Joe Crummey's Facebook page yesterday, and he listed his current residence as "Los Angeles, CA". Hmmm...

Guess the main question was, what did the numbers look like? If they were decent, if Joe was holding a lot of the share he inherited from Imus at 10, this makes little sense unless Cumulus is so deep into cost-cutting that they're not worrying about competition. (A terrible mistake if that's their mindset, IMHO.) If he wasn't giving Limbaugh a good lead-in, that's a different story, although Limbaugh's not as strong as he used to be in any event...in that case there's little to lose trying something new, although going 100% with national, or syndication-friendly, product leaves a huge opening for someone else to fill with a high energy local lineup. (An opening that Randy Michaels could easily fill by hiring a lineup of strong local hosts for 101.9 and repurposing it from a newser that can't compete with WCBS and WINS to a younger-skewing local talker that could make a real go of it taking on WABC and WOR with a true NYC slant. I can't believe that hasn't crossed his mind, especially since his consultant Walt Sabo built a similar station in Jersey into a successful long term player...)

I agree, that was little too harsh and probably a mis-characterization. If I could I would moderate-edit that a bit but it is too late. Depending on the target audience her input or use of sound bite "talking points" were probably right on target. I probably was just not the target.

I enjoyed Joe at first. But when that dopey side-kick was added, that was it for me until the last 15 minutes leading into Rush. She was clueless.

So far no change on WABC site, still listed.
Another post on NYCRadio Messageboard was : "now I'm hearing (it could be) Bernie McGuirk (in slot)"

Crummey made a comment at the end of tuesdays show, which may h ave sealed his doom.
He referred to himself as the listeners "jerry sandusky". I don't think the suits let that one go by.

I seriously doubt that any Cumulus "suits" are giving one iota of attention to what Joe Crummey---or any other of their properties are actaully saying on the air.

The irony is, the ultimate replacement for the time slot will likely be syndicated, too.

Yhe way Imus and Warner Wolfe were talking about it Friday, it must be a high profile person. Warner has worked with him before and said he was at the station Thursday. The Geraldo rumor sounds quite possible.

Herman Cain.....Mark Steyn.....Ann Coulter....Michelle Malkin....Donald Trump....but, please, not Geraldo. ;D

It seems pretty apparent to this listener that WABC has lost all programming sense- now this idiot. Pretty funny that when ever media people talk about "balance" they only mean more socialists on air.
Only good part-- like Crummey, Geraldo will be gone in less than a year. Nobody wants to be stuck in traffic, hearing that whiny voice nagging them.
