WABC New York heard in Hawaii

My best catch ever! This was a little after 12:30.

I was hearing two stations and possibly a third station on 770, one being KKOB which was the strongest.

Apparently KCBC stops broadcasting over the air (according to their schedule) at 1 am local time even though they have a continuous online stream after that. Many nights, I've heard the national Anthem just before 11 my time, so that was them signing off.

Anyway, I was wondering how I could ever ID the station trying to battle it out with KKOB for a short time. I assumed it was KTTH Seattle which I have heard here but it rarely shows up which is surprising.

At the same time, both WGN and WBBM were battling it out with KDWN and KKOH respectively, so I thought the conditions would be ripe coming from that direction. WLW was easily audible too.

So I put my computer downstairs so it wouldn't interfere with my radio and went to WABC's online audio stream. The news guy Noam Laden was on at the time. There was a delay, of course, but after listening over and over again with my headphones to a couple different video clips I captured from my radio, it was definitely his voice I was hearing, though barely audible.

Here it is. WABC is weak and hard to hear and the voice is subtle but listen closely at the beginning because it then fades away.

What a great catch. I congratulate you on your persistence!

Keep the DX reports coming.

Don't recall. Are you hearing anything from Alaska?

I haven't yet but I've been concentrating my efforts on getting more east beyond my previous distance record of WLW and also trying to hear Australia.

I don't know why, but after listening to 702 khz and 612 khz so much very late at night, I can't get even a trace of anything from Australia.

Strange, being that I've heard reports and seen videos of 612 ABC from Brisbane coming in well in Hawaii.

I heard 1116 from Brisbane on two different trips to Hawaii and you're approaching the time of year I heard it.
One time I caught it in late Feb. on another trip I heard it in March and it was as early as midnight HST on the March trip.
In early March I caught it several times so hopefully you can catch it soon.

I haven't tried 1116 in a while because it was a frequency loaded with background noise.

Have to try it again because sometimes that changes or maybe move the radio to another location.

Thanks for the reminder.

Nice catch with that PRD5, Hawaiigar. Shows just how good a radio it is, plus how important saltwater paths are.

Good luck in getting Oz on MW. If it reaches the west coast, it should hit Hawaii.

Once you find a less noisy spot you should be able to snag 1116 from Brisbane. I had no trouble hearing it numerous times on a Grundig G5 which is not nearly as good as the PRD5.

Good luck and keep the DX reports coming.

What an unbelievable catch in this day and age. Big congrats to Gar! Now go try for WFAN!!

Thanks!

WFAN will be a lot harder because KTNN has a better signal here than KKOB and there's some interference from the local KPUA in Hilo.

I thought about maybe WCBS, even though the station on 880 from Honolulu is easy to null most of the time and KRVN comes through a lot but then there's also KKMC that sends their signal right in our direction.

Strange as it may sound, it's actually easier to hear stations from Chicago such as WGN and WBBM and now WABC New York in Hawaii than it is on the west coast because the other big stations on the same frequencies are too strong on the west coast to allow Chicago or New York to compete.

And Radioman, I found a spot outside on the porch where there's no background noise on 1116 kHz when I put the radio facing in a very specific direction (also the direction of Australia) but last night anyway, I didn't hear even a trace of anything.

Will certainly be trying again.

Nice catch, Gar. Congratulations. IME, WCBS seems to have a slightly better nighttime signal than WABC, so I'm wondering if you might be able to snag that one as well. Although when I was in California last week, KRVN generally had a better signal than KKOB for some reason.

Gar:

Ever hear KYW 1060 in HI?

A buddy of mine since school days has it logged. He moved to Hawaii out of the service several decades ago. I'm no expert on azimuth geometry and such, but from a world globe here it looks as though there is a bit of a favored signal going that way from KYW's northwest lobe. Obviously that's the lobe that my pal heard.

And imagine you getting a K call from the East Coast, lol!

Way to geaux on the WABC catch!

I never even thought of looking for KYW because I didn't think they sent much signal this direction and I don't hear of it being heard that far west.

But since someone logged it here, I can listen for it.

Cyberdad, KRVN is often louder here than KKOB too. KHCM in Honolulu is easy to null out most of the time.

Of all the regular stations I get here at night, the one that impresses me the most is 820 WBAP Dallas. It's listenable most of the time and it never completely fades out to where the frequency is empty.

Not bad for that distance.

WBAP was one of the three mainland stations I heard on Oahu during my junior year in high school in Hawaii. On the north shore along with WLS and WWL. My mom's '62 Chevy Impala on a Saturday night. Living just west of Waikiki, there was too much noise, splatter, and harmonics to hear much of anything but locals on my cheap transistor. And my Halicrafters S-120 actually wasn't much better (although it was okay for SW).

Gar, have you heard KOKC on 1520? Last time I was in Hawaii 6 years ago, KOKC was so strong some nights I could hear it on my rental car radio near Waikiki. Same question for KFAQ Tulsa which I also heard well on 1170.

Great catch, gar! When I lived on Kauai and used to DX the Mainland, the best I ever got was WOAI in San Antonio.

Near Kennedy Airport in Queens one overnight, my buddy -- four blocks away from me -- heard KORL 650 'Radio Pacific'. And one other night I was convinced I heard KIKI 830.
This was all, of course, when the dial was less crowded than today, and quieter.
Vinny talked me out of 'counting' KIKI, although cx were quite west and they were the only thing ON 830 at that hour. And for some reason, I get the idea that WNBC 660 was off the overnight of my pal's reception of KORL.

But reiterating from an earlier post, Gar : Way to go! Try and send some of those Hawaiian AMers back here to the mainland, huh ? :)

KORL, "Radio Pacific"? Wonder when and where did they come up with that one? When I was living out there it was "KORL (pronounced "coral") Honolulu, Channel 65" and a bunch of PAMS sonovox jingles. What they did say sometimes at TOH for the legal ID was. "K-O-R-L Honolulu. For Hawaii....and the Pacific...Number 1". Which was basically untrue because K-POI was routinely beating them.
