WABC News and Features

I was listening to Larry Kudlow’s excellent show this morning on WABC. Kudos to John Catsimatidis for providing a platform for shows like these, especially on the weekends.

But good programming really makes some of the amateurish stuff during the breaks stand out. Much of the content in the local newscasts is silly.

Then there are Frank Morano’s day-old business reports. This morning I heard one several times where he mispronounced “legendary” investor Charlie Munger’s name three time in the report. But more important, the report was recorded before the market even closed on Friday so he was quoting Thursday's closing figures. That makes no sense, especially during these volatile markets. I realize mistakes happen, but in the middle of a top-notch financial show it really stands out. And repeated mistakes can be corrected if anyone really cares.

There are good national newscasts and financial reports available to WABC. Maybe they should consider going that route?

Features only make sense if they're sponsored. Otherwise they're just clutter.

My theory about these features in Kudlow is they're placeholders for commercials that don't exist. They could run PSAs too.

Kudlow is one of the shows that was supposed to be part of WABC's syndication service. So the show is structured to have some holes in the show for the local station spots. This feature may be filling one of those spots.

But yes, there are lots of outside financial networks that offer updated reporting from the Wall Street Journal and other places, but they usually require the station to clear their spots, which Cats doesn't want to do. He wants to be in the syndication business himself.

Have you listened at all to Jeff Kuhner's show and some of the spots he's voiced on that same station? Mispronunciations abound.

His excuse is that English is not his first language, IIRC.
English is his primary language. He was born in Montreal but can not speak French. His parents are from Croatia they may have not spoken English in the home both his parents could speak English. For a guy who almost has a PhD Kuhner should not sound like someone who does not have a command of the language
