WABC Rewound 2011

The best thing to listen to past WABC Rewound specials is Rewound Radio, they're going to do it again by Memorial Day weekend which will be three days of nothing but WABC Rewound from 1999 through 2009 all weekend long. Allan Sniffen did a great job last year putting together a special weekend featuring nothing airchecks from WABC on Rewound Radio. Now they're doing it again this Memorial Day weekend. Check out this link.

Dr. Know-it-all, you mean. If he were a genius of radio, why is he polishing molars?

That's all I'll say, and I won't say no more...

There is no mention either on www.RewoundRadio.com or Allan Sniffen's message board what his intentions are for Memorial Day 2011 (or the holiday weekend). *Could* the dentist roll out the old Rewound airchecks for another round on Rewound Radio as he did in May 2010? Sure, it's *possible*...nothing firm yet. It is clear that there will never be another over-the-air Rewound on WABC. No plans for an online-only edition have been announced there either.

What *could* happen with regard to WABC online is that they *could* reactivate the webpage that was used for the online-only edition of Rewound 2009 and re-used again in 2010. We'll have to wait and see. That page, with links that are currently dead/dormant, is here: http://wabcradio.com/sectional.asp?id=33049

Note: there are errors in some of the descriptions on the WABC Rewound webpage, along with two of the podcasts being duplicates with one podcast not included. If the page is revived for 2011, I'll find and post a link to the corrections and the missing podcast.

As I was putting together the playlist for my Memorial Day "T" Party Top 300 (shameless plug), I had just wondered about the "WABC Rewound" special - the other Memorial Day tradition - myself. We all know that the on-air special was phased out not too long ago. But Laurie did what she had to do, for WABC's long-term identity as a talk station. (With that said, this will most likely be my talk station's final year of the "T" party. :p )

Kudos to Allan, though, for keeping the "WABC Rewound" tradition alive, especially with "Rewound Radio". Say what you want about his radio career, or how he runs a message board, but let's give props where it's due.

She didn't have to do it. Rewound has no effect on the long-term identity of the station. It's a once a year event. If anything, the Saturday Night show ruined Rewound since it took the uniqueness away from it. Memorial Day was like a second Christmas for radio fans (ironically, WABC plays music on Christmas... and still did as of last year... how does that help the identity as a talk station?)

If you could do it on Christmas, you can do it on Memorial Day as well. 2 days out of a year don't destroy the format.

Because there is no money in radio!!! ;D

WABC(AM) has now been a talk station 7 years longer than it was Top 40. Rewound was novel when it first appeared, but that has long since worn off, especially when there are plenty of places to get oldies. No need to confuse WABC's talk audience for more than a few hours a week on Saturday nights.

Well, you can make a comfortable living polishing molars while still pursuing radio as a hobby.

If he were that great, he should be pulling down (not pulling teeth) a couple hundred $k either as a major market PD or consultant. The problem is, he doesn't treat it as a hobby, he treats it like he knows more than anyone else. Prove it or pipe down a bit and stop berating others. That's my issue.

Rewound radio is a fun idea, and that's what it should be: fun. He sucks the fun out of the room all the time.

I did notice how WABC's "Saturday Night Oldies" show quietly evolved into the Mark Simone P.M. Saturday show...

Christmas, meanwhile, is different from Memorial Day. Think about it - how many radio stations are playing wall-to-wall Memorial Day music from Easter until the end of May? ::) Plus, as far as Christmas Day is concerned, during the morning, WABC runs a syndicated show hosted by a guy from Mannheim Steamroller - "An American Christmas," I believe it's called. Many talk stations carry it. And in the afternoon, they've aired the Rush Limbaugh Christmas Day best-of - which, on some years, has consisted of music.

Let me put it this way. I have far more respect for my dentist than ANY radio person I know. My dentist saved my life.

As Larry Lujack once said when he was asked to define the term 'DJ', he replied, DUMB JOB! I have to agree.

Only the very lucky make it to the top.

But, I still love radio. It is fun circus.

I will be checking out Rewound Radio this Memorial Day weekend. Always a great listen.

Rewound was fun in the begining but as the years added up and the distance between Music and Talk grew, it became more trouble than it was worth. It just wasn't what the audience wanted and frankly those that did want it were so small in numbers why should WABC spend the time. It became like turning on WCBS to hear the traffic or weather and finding a Yankee game.

wish they would do a WMCA Rewound!!! Love to hear those "goodguys" :) that would be alot of fun!!! and maybe hear some call up and then I will know if they are ok!!! I miss Harry and Dandy!!! :( many others too!!!

Incidentally, WABC used to be the Yankees' radio flagship, so on Memorial Day, you may hear "Rewound" interrupted for that day's game (usually played in the afternoon).

Maybe B. Mitchell Reed, Jack Spector and Joe O'brien can call from heaven or wherever they are currently residing.
