Apples and oranges. Terrestrial radio - maybe 20 channels of interest to choose from. Internet - thousands of channels of interest to choose from. Terrestrial radio: lowest common denominator programming for a mass audience uninterested in checking out anything more adventurous. Internet: niche formats for engaged but small audiences.RADIO TRUTH said:Why will WABC never do it? Because the top {internet} audience was 198 unique listeners at one time. If the average price of a radio commercial is $5.35 per thousand listeners, this would make {internet} spots for WABC Rewound cost some where between $.75 and $1.06.

If you want to make money on the net via ad support, you need tens or hundreds of well-programmed branded niche channels to do it. And good luck with those multiple royalty payments per stream.
Terrestrial radio serves those who are left. Outside of a once or twice a year local (usually catastrophic) event drawing some interest in terrestrial radio, the audience consists of remainders who don't comprehend the other options or who just don't care.
Specialty programming like Rewound was used to draw attention to WABC and its heritage. The program has likely run its course in that respect. There are still a handful of substantive programs, like John Batchelor's show, but that's the exception, not the rule.
Say 'hi' to the tooth fairy next time she stops by your place. I'm one of the "93%" that "uses" radio each week... in my case for traffic and weather. Total time tuned in: 3 minutes a week. I might hear an ad or two during that period too.Jason Roberts said:Yep...terrestrial radio serves those who are left. Rewound was novel when it first appeared, but that has long since worn off, especially when there are plenty of places to get oldies. No need to confuse WABC's talk audience for more than a few hours a week on Saturday nights.

Yes yes yes, then by that impeckerable logic, 99% of internet radio is irrelevant.wgliradio said:Rewound Radio Online only has 198 unique listeners because it is irrelevent.

To you.
The rest of us are listening to it.
That's exactly the point. Internet listening, far from irrelevant, is replacing over the air listening. Yes, it's narrowcast niche formatted. That's also the point. Broadcast lowest-common-denominator outlets have been garnering less and less influence for awhile now, and this will continue. Each stream individually will have relatively few listeners when compared to old broadcast media but together as a medium, the internet is where the listeners are going. (And to file players and to cloud players etc....)wgliradio said:yes, most internet radio is irrelevant. The most listened to internet streams are from terrestrial broadcasters or organized netcasters like Pandora or Accuradio.
Rewound Radio plays only to a small following of people. It's the type of niche netcasting that makes listening to internet radio fun, but it never will be mainstream or could replace an over the air special of a similar type.
