WABC Rewound 2012?

nd2023

Banned
Any word if WABC will bring back Rewound this year now that there's a new program director?

I used to enjoy hearing old-time radio on WABC on Memorial Day. And for the past few years on rewoundradio.com.

The music died 30 years ago

I doubt very much if WABC Rewound will be on the air on Memorial Day. Sadly, demographic issues rear they ugly heads. The people who grew up with Musicradio WABC are now outside the highly desirable 25-54 demographic. WABC can not program to the radio geeks.

Likely Alan Sniffen will have WABC Rewound on Rewound Radio for at least Memorial Day and possibly the entire 3 day weekend. He has not yet announced it.

It was a concept that sure was fun while it lasted. But let's face it. WABC has been a talker longer than it was Top 40. It is time to move on .

Plus they had this idea that each year they needed to boradcast airchecks that had not previously bee used on Rewound. As if we would all remember "hey, they played that tape 5 years ago!" The result was they were airing less than choice stuff.

I'm sure the prep each year involved a hell of a lot of work for the station and lets be honest, probably made much of the audience they wanted to serve mad when they turned on the radio Memorial Day! Time to move on and serve the audience they have today, not a handful of folks living in the past.

As is, "Serving the Audience they have today" on Memorial Day will likely consist of an understudy in the Morning Drive and "Best Of" taped programs the rest of the day. Memorial Day is a day to REMEMBER those who have served our country. Since it is a break from our regular routine, there ought to be no problem in WABC taking a break from their regular routine and spinning music that means something to many veterans. The broadcast doesn't have to be entirely music or on tape. How about a review of airchecks of the top 10 hits of the years of the Musicradio era, with ample time for people to call in with their memories of significant news events?

Time for me to stir the pot: This is the first Memorial Day on WABC that Laurie Cantillo, who had done away with the "Rewound" special, is not with the station. Though I don't see that making any bit of difference...

I would bet that you will never see the kind of production that Rewound was on WABC again. Too much work for too little payback.

I have to agree with this. I'd like to add that you don't need to be old enough to remember that era to appreciate a weekend of radio history, you just have to love the art of radio and find it interesting to hear how things once were. Furthermore I don't think it was a lot of work for nothing -- it was an interesting way for WABC to remind the audience about its heritage and generate a little publicity for itself on a weekend when it would have otherwise had none. Look, how many years ago did they end it? Yet here we are still talking about it.

Anyway I'm sure the point is moot since it's not happening, but I thought it was a great specialty weekend those years that they did it.

I was born 6 years after Musicradio 77 died, yet I still appreciate it. It's interesting to hear "oldies" on WABC. But of course, at the time, they weren't oldies, they were top 40 hits.

Now, I haven't really given it much thought, but could it be due to a change in "operating philosophy" after the station was sold to Citidel / Cumulus?

WABC did change after the sale. The belief was that you should offer the same programs on holidays as you did normally M-F. People who may not have had a chance to listen before may stumble on a "best of" program, like it, and become a steady listener. Rewound shows previously ran on several of the old ABC Top 40 stations (such as WLS). They all stopped.

While not a "WABC Rewound", the 3rd Annual "Rewound Radio Rewind" is coming this Memorial Day Weekend 2012
from 8AM ET Sat. 5/26/12 until Midnight ET Mon. night 5/28/12 - Tue. morning 5/29/12.
90 airchecks will be aired over the weekend.

Announcement in this post - link: http://www.musicradio77.com/wwwboard/messages/395920.html

Past Rewound history from 1998-2009 is at this link
(scroll down about 75-80% of the page to where it says "Talkradio WABC remembers Musicradio WABC in 1998):
http://www.musicradio77.com/index.html

Downloads available for 2009 internet-only edition; all other years only have a listing of what was played on-air. Other than 1998 (most of which won't be included in the 2012 edition), most (if not all) of the other year's airchecks listed likely will be played on the Memorial Day 2012 weekend. There are additional never-before-heard airchecks, too.

Besides the various links to listen live offered on the RewoundRadio.com home page (instant-on pop-up audio player, Windows Media Player link, smart phones, internet radio, etc.), there are basically 5 different streams of varying quality for Rewound Radio.
Direct streaming URLs to copy/paste only and plug in to various media players:

64 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo AAC - http://rewoundradio.com:5000/rewound (not for Windows Media Player)
128 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo AAC - http://rewoundradio.com:6000/ (not for Windows Media Player)
64 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo - http://rewoundradio.com:7000/
128 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo - http://rewoundradio.com:8000/
128 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo - http://rewoundradio.com:9000/

If you're willing to search, there are plug-ins available that will make Windows Media Player AAC compatible.

Checked the station website www.WABCRadio.com and they still have the 2009 Rewound internet-only airchecks posted -
link: http://wabcradio.com/sectional.asp?id=33049

Fortunately WABC's webmaster has finally cleared up the one missing aircheck/double-posting of another aircheck problem that had been on their 2009 Rewound page since its inception. At least all the airchecks are there to play and/or download; however, the descriptions of some airchecks are inaccurate date-wise.

Correct info for the 2009 Rewound internet-only airchecks (also including podcast downloads) is here -
link: http://www.musicradio77.com/rewound2009.html
(Note: while the overall listings match for the 12 hours of airchecks on WABCRadio.com and Musicradio77.com outside of the "description discrepancies" mentioned above, the specific hour-by-hour listings won't match on the two websites.)

The 2009 airchecks mentioned above will more-than-likely be randomly included in the 2012 Rewound Radio presentation.

Do you have any airchecks of the past WABC Rewound specials from 2000 until 2008? I missed all of these, because "LinoNYC" posted all of them back a few years ago from Sendspace, and all of the links are dead. Maybe you should repost all of these onto Mediafire or 4shared. This would do a lot beter than that godawful Sendspace. I hope this helps.

@PJC: Thanks for the links - but you forgot to mention Rewound Radio also has their own app - though one can easily plug in one of the URL's you provided into the TuneIn app and listen, if they feel so inclined, or even search for Rewound on TuneIn and favorite it...
