It seems the way ratings are constructed, most Talk stations have little to fear about tune out due to brokered weekend programming. You want your weekday dayparts, 6-10am, 10-3pm, 3-7pm and 7pm-12am to have good ratings. But because Saturdays and Sundays don't count toward those dayparts, Talk stations feel they can do whatever they want with them.
Maybe if dayparts were seven days a week, Talk stations couldn't afford to run bad weekend shows in dayparts where they run Rush or Hannity, M-F. The infomercials, financial shows and snake oil doctor shows would drag down their weekday stars. But that's not the way ratings are reported.
For oldr AM audiences, weekend mornings are that much different than weekday mornings. My parents wake up at the same time, have breakfast at the same time and listen to the radio at the same time, seven days a week. They're not college students sleeping till noon on Sundays because they were up all hours on Saturday night.
Yet on weekends, many Talk stations run bad programs on Sat. and Sun. morning. My parents either put up with it, turn the radio off, or switch to an All-News station. I've always noticed that WCBS and WINS have higher weekend numbers than they do weekday morning numbers. That's because they're still running their regular All-News format on weekends. They don't have to compete with Imus or John Gambling on weekends. They're competing with vitamin infomercials and The Garden Hotline.
Of course, there is one way to get rid of weekend infomercials, on both radio and TV. DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM! But I guess those people who do get suckered in aren't reading this board.
