WABC-TV Getting Its Sports News From ESPN

The New York Daily News calls it "the latest example of corporate cousins sharing resources". I call it another example of live sports anchors on newscasts going the way of the Strat-O-Matic.

WABC/Channel 7 is going to start using content from ESPN Radio for sports segments during "Eyewitness News This Morning".

The article doesn't say, but I would assume ESPN/1050's Jared Max would be handling these duties for WABC-TV.

Doesn't surprise me. The Orlando, FL ABC affiliate has the late night anchors do the sports reports for the early morning (pretaped). I've seen it done in other markets as well.

Why have a dedicated sports anchor just for the morning shift, especially since most of the sports happens in the evening?

NBC (as a network) does the same thing. Except for Al Roker, all their weather personnel now appear to be from The Weather Channel.

It actually makes more sense to have a sports anchor in the morning than in the evening. In the morning they can recap the previous night's scores and highlights. At 5pm it's too late to talk about the previous night's games, and too early to talk about anything useful regarding the games coming up that evening.

The Daily News report is hypocritical, they have been getting their national news from
AP, UPI, Reuters for years - from their “corporate cousins” and partnerships.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

Every media outlet that reports news subscribes to AP, UPI, Reuters, etc or else they can't use their content. Otherwise, for example, every local TV station reporting election results would have to call each county clerk around the state or country to ask for their county's election results, since they legally can't use the AP's results if they don't subscribe, since the AP does all the hard work of collecting the data and sends it to the subscribers. I wouldn't say that's a shady corporate partnership.

No, neither would I. The hypocracy comes in if the NYDN is complaining that "Channel 7" is now doing what the Daily News has been doing for years.

Actually, these days most county elections boards post results themselves on the internet as they tabulate them. Then all 50 states have boards of election that contract out for the software to post results statewide.

The wire services and press cooperatives that used to do election returns have been out of that fame for about a decade now.

Later.....

Perhaps I was not clear. The anchor for the 11 pm news at that outlet covers that evenings games and stays later to record a report for the NEXT morning
