Nipsey Russell(October 13, 1924-October 3, 2005)

He was a great comedian/actor, and a pioneer for African-american performers. He'll be missed.

Nipsey Russell also was frequently seen over the years as a game-show panelist, and was much in demand by game-show producers.

He was also nicknamed "The Poet Lauerate of Television" because he had a knack for composing poems "on the fly".

In the mid 1970's, when the game show "Rhyme and Reason" premiered (where contestants and celebrities had to come up with rhyming phrases), Russell, already well-known for his impromptu poetry, was signed as a regular panelist. He was by far the best celebrity panelist on that show.

I think my best memory of Nipsey Russell was when he appeared usually in the first seat on Match Game '7X....He would always seem to have the audience as well as the rest of the panel laughing.

I'd imagine that one of the places that he worked here in Atlanta, IIRC, the Varsity, near Georgia Tech may have something set up in his honor as he has an autographed picture there.<P ID="signature">______________
