WABC Weekend Lineup Adds Pirro, Kerik and Sterling

Red Apple Media and TALKRADIO 77 WABC add some big names in New York to the WABC weekend on-air schedule, including Judge Jeanine Pirro and former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik. In addition, radio talk host Walter Sterling joins the weekend lineup. All three shows will be simulcast on WLIR-FM/Long Island.

"The Jeanine Pirro Show" airs Sundays from 11am-12pm and launched this past Sunday. Bernie Kerik's "Behind The Badge" will debut this Saturday, July 26, from 2-3pm. "The Walter Sterling Show," which launched two weeks ago on WABC, airs Saturdays from 9-10pm.

These shows will also be on WLIR-FM.

Imagine that, a real radio station airing real radio programs on the weekends. What a concept!

Kudos to Cats. I hope this idea catches on.

50,000 watts of hate. I don't know why anyone would offer kudos to the kind of vile disinformation this group spews. Along with Giulianani these are some of the most extreme & loathsome rightwing figures in the nation. I guess all those people who predicted Cats might offer a more centrist variety of of talk programming were hallucinating.

"Hate" is a relative term.

If you criticize my particular perspective with insult and invective, it is "hate".

If I do the same to you, it is also "hate".

Our society has changed "disagreement" to mean "hate". It's divisive; we need to respect points of view that do not agree with ours without the need to insult our opponents. That goes for every aspect of life.

Conciliation requires negotiation, not conflict.

Intolerance of opposing or just different perspectives led to the Crusades and we are still seeing the effect of intolerance about 900 years after!

Your kind of post is a reason why this place has the vitality of a graveyard.

Why, because I'm not part of the echo chamber you want this place to be? There's another New York radio board where all the senior citizens sing the praises of Rudy Giuliani and allow WABC's programming to go unchallenged if that's what you want. But I don't think a station like WABC should get a free pass for its toxic content.

If you really want more vitality here, try starting topics that aren't all about rightwing AM talk stations with 1 shares. There's a reason the ratings are so low, they appeal to very small audiences both on air and online.

Over on the L.A. board here there's a thread about KROQ with lots of vitality, over 8,000 views and 200 replies as of right now. That kind of thing is interesting at least.

WABC has a cume of over 300,000. KROQ, in March before all the COVID stuff hit radio use, had a cume of 600,000.

In other words, both of them appeal to very small audiences. WABC is in a growth postion, which KROQ has pretty much self-destructed and has no traction at all.

And WABC is interesting because it is a locally owned station which is a stand-alone in a period of consolidation and Coronavirus-incduced revenue collapse. Seeing if a station putting shows on the weekend that are not about gardening or quack remedies is, in itself, interesting in 2020.

My view is that all of these people basically say the same thing. I read how people complain about small playlists and repetition, but isn't that what this is?

Is it "over 300,000" or "under 400,000"? Either way you look at it, it's a niche.

WABC is in a growth postion...

I think some of that must be curiosity factor and sample tuning. Will the novelty of the new shows wear off though? I don't think many people outside of the most hardcore conservative base can take the likes of Rudy and Jeanine for long periods of time. Also I've seen reminders from you and many others that Covid ratings are not reliable indicators of normal listening.

It's interesting, I'll give you that. But still not admirable to see AM radio take the lowest possible road with its choice of talent as usual.

But you compared it with the near-dead KROQ, which is an FM and even more a niche now.

And it has about 5 times the cume of WBAI, a full-signal FM.

It's been increasing for 3 months, so it is gaining partisans.

That's your opinion, from a Blue perspective. People in the middle or on the Red side may see it as different.

If KROQ, the heritage Alt. station in LA is losing ground, is that an indication Alt 92.3 in New York may not be doing very well?

People in the middle are not represented in talk radio today. Most of those people are seen as too liberal. George Will is on MSNBC now,

While not a "talk radio" format per se, but NPR does a nice job of trying to balance.

For anyone who listens, KROQ divorced itself from everything in its heritage except the call letters.

KROQ may have a heritage among its listeners, there were not many of those left. So they did a mid-stream format shift. KROQ was sill alive until the morning show broke up; the last 18 months were the down side of the ratings roller coaster.

Chris Hahn is a loathsome rightwing extremist? Good one! Perhaps you should listen to the station before commenting.

CNBC reports that Red Apple Media Conservative Talk 770 WABC New York is in the final stages of contract negotiations with Bill O’Reilly to join the station’s daily lineup.

CNBC states that the show would debut this fall with O’Reilly’s agent Fred Newman telling the network, “We are in the final stages of a contract and a program should be on in the fall.” Red Apple Media owner John Catsimatidis confirmed the negotiations as well.
