WABC

The word heard from everyone who has said authoritatively....

What rewind?

Later . . . .

The lady PD made it very clear last year. WABC is a talk station. No music holidays.

Re: WABC Rewound 2010 (same as 2009)

WABC Rewound is no longer an "on-air" presentation, whether on WABC-AM-770 or (as rumored would happen last year, but never did happen) WPLJ-HD3-95.5 (WABC's FM HD channel simulcast). The last on-air Rewound aired on WABC on Memorial Day 2008, which included the WNBC Don Imus aircheck & the WABC-FM Bob Lewis aircheck (The Beatles "White Album" tracks before their "official" release)

For 2009 & again this year, WABC has made the same 12 podcast hours available for playback & downloading on their website ONLY. They're available now - Friday morning 5/28/2010 (for how long in 2010, I couldn't say; in 2009, the podcast/playback links were available through Labor Day 2009). Link to WABC Rewound 2009/2010 podcast page here:

Unfortunately there are a few errors on the above webpage. The biggest ones are that the Hour 4 podcast (which is repeated in Hour 9) should have been a Dan Ingram aircheck from April 1, 1972. Also, the Hour 7 podcast is misidentified; the date reads "April 1, 1972" when the actual date should be "April 1, 1971". Other errors include the misspelling of Roby Yonge's name ("Young" & "Yound"); the misspelling of Johnny Donovan's name ("Johhny"); Hour 5 podcast's date should be "October 14, 1970", not "November 14, 1970"; Hour 6 podcast's date should be "March 9, 1971", not "January 16, 1971"; Hour 8 podcast's date should be "October 27, 1970", not "October 8, 1974"; Hour 11 podcast's time should be "7pm", not "8pm"; Hour 12 podcast includes an additional aircheck from December 30, 1976. These errors were corrected (& the "missing" April 1, 1972 Dan Ingram aircheck added) on an "alternate" podcast page set up on the Musicradio77.com website, whose link is here:

http://musicradio77.com/rewound2009.html

Meanwhile, "the dentist" is running 1998-2009 WABC Rewound airchecks with Johnny Donovan's intros/outros removed on his Rewound Radio website from Friday 5/28/2010 at 4pm EDT to early Tuesday morning 6/1/2010. Link here:

I can't imagine Memorial Day as a big day for talk radio listening. And I am a WABC listener on weekdays, but not on holidays. The broadcast version of Rewound was a great tribute to what was an amazing radio station. A shame the 'lady PD' has no sense of history.

To be fair WABC can not program to the radio geeks. I too am disappointed that there will be no Rewound on 770 AM, but everything in entertainment has a life cycle. With each succeeding year enthusiasism for Rewound declined slightly. It is the opinion of WABC management that they can make more money from advertisers airing reruns of talk shows.

I thank Allan Sniffen for having Reound on his internet station.

Quite frankly, and this was echoed on Sniffen's board this week, as well, WABC's "lady PD" - she does have a name, and that would be Laurie Cantillo - could have just as easily asked Sniffen not to play any old WABC "Musicradio" material over his Internet stream. Clearly, she recognizes that there is a time and a place for history... it's just not on WABC's own frequency these days, is all...

And please appreciate the fact that WABC even decided to post some old airchecks on their website, grammatical errors and all (though promos on WABC said that it would start today at "4 PM"... they're already up there now?).

The biggest drawback I found listening to "Rewound" was that the audio from a car radio today is crap from the AM. This is not a cut on WABC, it is on the front ends of the car radios of today. WABC sounded great from the stock radios of then. Go to a junk yard and pick one up.

Gee, I don't know why people don't want to hear music on AM anymore.

The car manufacturers "Soured the Milk"!

The airchecks from WABC Rewound will still being heard on Memorial Day on Rewound Radio. The only Rewound airchecks that WABC used to put out was last year as a downloadable MP3. I hope if anyone who has airchecks of WABC Rewound from 1999 until 2008, please let me know. Thanks!

I started to record it at 4 PM yesterday, but I didn't do it, because the Rewound airchecks lasted for three days, and it took forever to make, so right now, I will not be doing it again. Again, anyone who has it, please let me know. Thanks!

I missed not hearing Rewound on WABC last year. Not everyone has access to a computer. People are mobile and I'll be out on the field on Memorial Day.

I agree with the program director that WABC is a talk station. But Rewound has gotton a great reception over the years it's been on, and part of WABC''s legacy is the glory years as a Top 40 station.

Every year on Memorial Day I took my walkman with me to listen to WABC's Rewound.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

WABC streams are available from several "APP"s. Even with my Palm Pre, I can stream them.

Headphones and a walkman let you listen to some of the airchecks pretty close to what they sounded like back then.

The tapes vary because some were donated for the purpose of "Rewound" as a result they were on R-R, and cassettes.

I recorded the final hour in 1982 on an 8-track, because that was all I had available at the time.

I'm sure it's annoying to play it back and have to endure the track changing in the middle of a song - but it's better than nothing, I guess...

Annoying- yes, better than nothing - also, yes!

It only happened every 20 minutes, IIRC.
