So, we are now less that 2 months away from the departure of Rush from the 12-3 slot on WABC. We know that Savage is moving up to 3 to replace Hannity, but what of the Rush slot? WABC is the only Cumulus station that he is departing from, so can we expect Huckabee, a retread of some past NY host, someone from a Cumulus station in the mid west, or someone out of the blue? It's been very very quiet.
 
You have to be realistic about these station's future. The existing audiences are in terminal decline. 710, 770, 1050, 1130 And 1560 are all now essentially vanity outlets due to their being in market #1.

The real question is; what happens to them once their current owners decide they no longer have value as a sales pitch.

Huckabee & other cumulus talkers may be on WABC soon. Or did I hear cumulus say Rush would be
replaced on WABC by a local talker ? Who could it be ?
 
I bet it's either some guy making $40,000 a year at a Cumulus station in Gary Indiana or some "name" from the past like Barry Farber, or Joe Crummey, or Curtis Sliwa, or Steve Marlzberg, or Richard Bey or the like!

I seem to recalll cumulus saying a local NYC talker likely would replace Rush on WABC.
Anyone else recalll hearing that ? and , most liikely a conservative talker I assume.
 
Look...we know that Hannity I being replaced by Savage, so I wouldn't think time is a factor. I wonder if they have a plan or not. Noam is a good second banana to Geraldo, but do you really think they'd give him 12-3? I'd love to see a new person to NYC in that spot but I fear not. Anyone want to speculate that the "retirement" of John Gambling on December 20th from WOR would make a January 2nd debut on WABC very possible. Who says you can't go home?? Twice at WOR and twice at WABC?

I don't see Gambling jumping right in to replace Rush. At his age I think his desire to cut back is sincere.

In his initial on-air retirement announcement Gambling said he wants to spend the winter in Florida and then decide what to do professionally, if anything. He did leave the door open for a syndicated show saying that, although he's best known to New Yorkers, the Gambling name does have some National recognition.

This morning Gambling again said that he loves the show while he's doing it but it's the hours and other stuff that goes with it that he's not crazy about. He could do syndication from Florida in the winter and from Long Island in the summer. So I'll bet he'll take a shot at a syndicated show, maybe live from 10am to noon, but not right away.

The PERFECT Rush replacement, IMO, is Jerry Doyle. He's energetic, youthful sounding and irreverent -- not unlike the early Rush. Doyle is not especially politically polarizing -- a trait that's losing favor in today's talk radio -- and he knows where to draw the line to avoid advertiser boycotts. He already has a pretty good following AND he's undoubtedly available, given his troubles with his current syndicator. Seems like a no-brainer for Cumulus.
 
Just for fun I'm going to make the case that on January 1st Joan Hamburg moves to WABC:

1) She sounds younger than Imus so she'll help lower the demo.

2) These days WABC appears to sustain itself mostly through the sale of foam pillows so she will bring a new and diverse list of advertisers to the station.

3) Since former PD Laurie Cantillo got the boot, WABC has been programmed hand to mouth with no attempt to build an audience for the future. So if Joan Hamburg brings in some extra cash for the next couple of years, that will fit their strategy just fine.
