WABC's programming crossroad

Last thing New York needs is yet another sports outlet. WABC's ratings which are not great will be non existent. WIP in Philly runs the CBS Sports Network and has no virtually no listeners. Yes, I know there will be a presence in the #1 market for the network, but what a waste of one of the greatest stations and signals, if this happens.

Once Rush & Sean are gone, WABC is done. D-O-N-E.

Which means Cumulus will be able to easily flip it to CBS Sports Network, and allow WFAN to remain live & local.

Time to try Liberal talk again, on a real signal this time.

In an interview with AllAccess, Cumulus C.O.O. John Dickey indicated that WABC will be going more local.
" You will see some great hyper-local talent surface... both WABC and KABC are serving large communities and we will invest in local programming to make these stations better."
In the same interview, Dickey also stated he is very pleased with the progress of Nash FM, including its new morning show.

Show of hands....who believes the Dickeys??? I wonder how much crap they will dump on WABC and or WPLJ once they get ownership of DG?? The march to ruin the former ABC Radio stations will continue! Damn Disney!!

By that logic KABC should have flipped back at the beginning of the year. And I do consider it vital in spite of being on AM for 660 to stay with the main WFAN programming. Unlike in Philly where 610 covered about the same area as 94.1, 660 covers a lot more area than 101.9. Also I read a few months back the AM-FM ratio for WFAN is about 80-20. That's another reason why they've been hesitant to begin with.

As for WABC, I don't believe for one second they will go more local. That's not how Cumulus rolls.

Actually KFI just a a big ratings drop, whether it is permanent? Savage was doing a local show in SF and a syndicated show for a time, then they merged. It will be interesting what happens to WOR vs WABC, but talk radio seems to be going down. I bet both stations slip a couple of notches. Talk Stations that were in the top 5 in a market are now below 10 and dropping.

Unless talk radio reinvents itself I'm afraid you're right. Unfortunately most casual listeners think talk radio is Rush/Hannity/Levin -- especially Rush. Beneath the surface there are many hard working and entertaining talk hosts most people have never heard of.

Rush evolved from a fun-loving satirist into an angry, shouting old curmudgeon. Hannity and Levin copied his second act. They all could have evolved with the times but now it's too late. Talk radio needs to bring the second tier of hosts into the forefront and find new up and coming talent to fill the gaps around them.

Many of you will sneer at this as the musings of a hopelessly ancient man, but I will say it anyway. As one who grew up with WABC in the 1960's, whenever I tune (however briefly) to 770 kHz I can't help but think of what it felt like to visit the World Trade Center site ten years ago: where two mighty, magnificent towers once stood is a deep hole.
