WABE doesn't like Presidential funerals

I was tuning around this morning to see who was broadcasting the funeral for the late President Ford, and the only Atlanta station carrying the funeral - WSB-AM.

What got me is that while the nation was observing the loss of one our nation's leaders, WABE was cranking out the Chopin and the Mozart. Yes - WABE failed to carry the funeral.

The statewide GPB Radio network was carrying the funeral. I don't understand why WABE didn't, unless they couldn't bear the thought of depriving people of classical music for 2 hours.

I think WABE should hang their heads in shame. They should apologize, and preempt classical music for an entire day as punishment.

Can we just find one more thing to whine about? If EVERY station, radio and TV, in Atlanta were carrying the Ford funeral, someone here would complain about that, too. The funeral coverage was widely available for those who wanted to listen or watch. I cannot fault any station for offering an alternative.

The guy was president thirty years ago, and it's not as if he did anything before, while, or after he was President. How many times do you want to hear "he pardoned Nixon, ergo healing the nation" anyway?

What we know about President Ford:
1. From Michigan
2. Pardoned Nixon
3. Got shot at
4. Had a wife with a substance abuse problem
5. Kept his mouth shut after he left office (except when Clinton was in the White House)
6. Lived 30 years after he was booted out of office
7. Wasn't ELECTED (and that's about the most remarkable thing...)

When Carter dies, you'll get your dead president coverage. Why? Because he's from Georgia for one thing...and for several others, he's done a lot since being president (good and bad).

goodness-presidential funerals on the radio? no disrespect to president ford but it's depressing enuff on tv.............that's worse than golf play-by-play on the radio

So, um, you have WSB to listen to right? There ya go. And six TV stations to choose from.

Here's the issue. WABE is a public radio station that recieves tax dollars along with donations (althought much more of the latter).

If flags are flying at half staff at government buildings, and the mail is stopped, then public radios should do something. Carrying the funeral was that something.

And along with accepting tax dollars comes the moral obligation of tossing their regular programming out the window to bore everyone to death? I think that's carrying public service a few steps too far. A part of "honoring the memory of a fallen leader" includes not annoying everyone with over the top coverage that makes most sane people want to spit at the mere mention of his name. WABE had no more responsibility to broadcast the service than Q-100.

so they should do the exact same thing all the TV stations and a handful of cable channels AND major n/t stations were doing? doing *something* for the sake of doing something isn't very bright

The Georgia part I will freely give, But what in the hell did he ever do that was GOOD, or BRIGHT? Sorry, I can't come up with a thing, and I agree a Public Radio Station should have done the right thing and showed some type of honor... Geez they always beg for our money, then use it the right way! Jimmy Carter? By the way , who besides a Peanut Farmer would cruise over to other countries after he's out of office and stir up things?

  • Brokered and signed the Camp David Accords in 1978 between Israel and Egypt, a peace which has endured to this day.
  • Helped broker ceasefire in Bosnia
  • Helped eradicate guinea worm infection, a disease which affected 3.2 million people in nineteen different Asian and African countries.
  • Helped eradicate river-blindness.

What he said. Face it; Carter was a better sitting and ex president than Ford. No matter how great Hannity makes the latter out to be.

jimmy carter takes a lot of crap from the radical right wing, "worst prez ever" and all that. he was good and close friends with president ford, he's a man of peace and a devout christian-U would think the radical right would love a guy like that (except the "peace" part, i suppose)
