I heard some of the newly spiffed WABG while I was in the delta yesterday. The signal wasn't so good driving north on 49 until I got close to Greenwood. The signal was just listenable heading north until around Minter City.

I recorded some of it with my digital camera. Aircheck here: http://www.joeycummings.com/downloads/WABG_Aircheck04_23_08.mp3

It's a funky little station playing classic rock and old school blues. The imaging is decent and James Poe was handling all of the DJ, commercial VO and weather alert duties. "All James, All The Time."

I'm wondering if the station isn't operating at reduced power sometimes... I know before the new folks took over, the station was off the air at night most of the time. And the station on 1240 consistently gets out better during the day than 960, despite being a lil lower powered.

I enjoy the station sometimes when I'm down in the area; it's just too weak to be listenable up in Grenada when I live. :-\

I haven't seen the license specs but I think Larry told me it was a 3 tower directional array.

Thanks for the aircheck. I sure hope they "make it".

It's a three tower array west of town on Money Rd. I had to pull shifts there from sunset to sign-off during 1976 & 1977 when I worked for WABG-TV and the AM was directional. I'll bet they still have the McMartin xmitter they installed just after I left. Between that and the condition of the towers, it could be a money pit.

The day signal should be better than it is for the power & frequency. On 960 kHz with a modern transmitter and a good tower/ground system it should sing but what is there to cover besides Greenwood?

Grenada, Winona and Indianola should be reasonable targets but in its current state the station isn't worth a crap in any of those towns. :(

In all of the imaging and DJ chatter, the station claims to serve Greenwood and Clarksdale. Clarksdale?

Clarksdale!? That's a hoot. That Forrest City station on 950 obliterates them in that area; in fact on cloudy days I've heard it bleeding over on 960 as far down as Charleston.
