WABI-TV 5 to add 4:30 a.m. news

According to their website, WABI will start their morning news at 4:30 instead of 4:55 competing directly with WLBZ 2. They will move the CBS Morning News to 4 a.m.. I also noticed "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Scrubs" will be gone from overnight programming. Joining the overnight will be the displaced "My Name Is Earl".

Scrubs usually airs on their CW subchannel, they've been shuffling the sitcoms around because Regis & Kelly moved to WVII Channel 7 and their fall replacement for 9am (Nancy Grace's new show) doesn't start for a few weeks

But "Scrubs" has also been airing at 3:30 a.m. since 2008. For a guy who gets up early, I've enjoyed WABI's overnight lineup of "Raymond", "King of the Hill", "Scrubs" and "Family Guy". This moving "Raymond" and "Scrubs" for a temporary fix has left the overnight with wonderful infomercials. ::)

Earl? Is [this] the week to be doing that? <

I have a feeling that on Friday, the music video of "Goodbye Earl" by The Dixie Chicks is going to be the most-shared YouTube video link on Facebook...

Is there enough news and viewership in Bangor and downeast Maine at 4:30 am to make such a newscast viable? Heck, Chicago stations are just now premiering 4:30 newscasts....but Bangor?

It's not like people have to get up that early to beat the traffic.

Um, no on the news, and for viewership, well there might be more people watching than presenting the news, but the only people up are overnighters and the few morning radio people prepping their 6 a.m. shows. Oh and those who have to drive 50 miles to get a cup of coffee at Dunkin' Donuts or On the Run.

We do have good ol' channel 7 with overnight jewelry shopping and ABC World News Now. Wait, their first newscast is at 6 p.m.

Heck, 8:15 would be fine.

Looks like you covered us both, Maine-I-Ac. For the most part, it appears that their early news is just a re-hash of their 6 & 11 PM news from the night before.

And, do they ever really drink whatever is in those mugs?

Call me crazy, but I believe there are still a lot of farmers in the viewership area that rise before the sun does and would probably appreciate the early start.

It's the same thing as with other markets. People are commuting to work earlier and going to bed earlier (the former necessitating the latter.) Hence the available audience at 11PM is shrinking and the duplication of news stories is less of a factor. Bangor was traditionally been an early-to-bed, early-to-rise market even before the emerging trend towards longer commutes. It's an even more ingrained viewer habit in The County, where WAGM's "Potato Picker's Special" airs starting at 4:30A during potato harvest season every year.
