WABI's Gordon Manual

Sad to see the passing of former WABI anchor and news director Gordon Manual. Gordon ran a great news organization on Channel 5 back in the 70's and early 80's. I worked for him on week-ends and he was one of the 'good guys'.

I saw the obit in the BDN and wondered if it was him. Yes he was a professional and set the bar high for news on TV5. But seeing his age, that must have made him in his 20's when he was on TV. I was young at the time and thought he must have been at least 40. Time changes perception.

Yes, Maine-i-ac,Gordon was in his mid to late 20's when he started at Channel 5. He was 28 when I went to work there in the fall of 1974 and he was promoted to News Director shortly after that. Ralph Lowe was news director at the and left in that fall. Several reporters from Gordon's era went on to bigger things--Steve Martin now does play-by-play in the NBA; Michell Marsh went to CBS; Jean Merserve now at CNN and many others that I no longer can recall.

It was mentioned on the WABI-TV5 news at 6 that evening. He always seemed pretty sharp and professional to me. I remember giving him many news stories when I was stationed in SW Harbor in the Coast Guard back in 70's.
Didn't Jonathan LeVeen go on to WBZ TV in Boston???
Not sure where he is now.

Yes, that's right. I found this info about Jon on the web:

Jon LeVeen lives at Pemaquid Beach and served on Bristol’s Parks Commission from 2003 to 2009. Born in Worcester, MA, he’s a former TV news anchorman and reporter in Boston, Hartford and Bangor
and the original owner of WAVX (“The Classical Wave” 106.9) in Thomaston. When not out hiking with his Golden Retriever, Molly, you’ll find Jon at home working on audio, video or web projects, or playing
jazz piano.
