WABQ 1460 Auto-Pilot Baseball

Been listening to Indians Baseball this afternoon (Sunday) from WABQ on 1460.

Is the station in such financial trouble that they can't afford a board op?

The Indians network feed runs completely straight. When it is time for local spot breaks or station IDs, the station just broadcasts dead air!
Entire local spot breaks are just big blocks of dead air and after "we now pause for station identification, on the Cleveland Indians baseball network" there is just silence for a few seconds, then the network game resumes.

Amazingly sloppy and sad that any radio station would allow this.

i wouldn't doubt that this was an automation gaff and that tones sent to fire off local elemnets werne't working... either that or they just didnt wanna hrie a board op and felt it ok to run dead air

Same thing happened down in Weirton-Steubenville a few years ago with the former owners of 1430 WEIR a Pittsburgh Pirate affilate. However I think this was worse. Many times around 9pm they would simply shut the game off and go back to the automated format. Rumor had it, that when the production guy was done doing his production, he would shut the game off and leave for the night. Now that station has been sold and the new owner does everything right on the mark, you get the full game complete with almost all breaks sold out! Now when my beloved Bucco's are getting blown out of the water more often then not, I shut the game off in shear discust. Maybe I should get on the Indiams bandwagon.( By the way what ever happened to Ricardo Rincon?)

Back to WABQ, don't they run relgious block programming most of the day? I remember back in the 1540 days that was all that one would hear on that station.

I don't recall there ever being any sort of automation for the Indians/Browns/Cavs radio networks. I COULD be wrong, but I don't think I am (or maybe they added that sometime in the last couple years since I've been gone). I did not work directly with the Indians, but...I did with the Browns. We had to have a board op off-network. You can bet, if there WAS trip-tone technology available, it would've been taken advantage of on the Browns, too.

My guess - sloppy/no board op/board op error, unsold, or unimportant to someone.

Cleveland Indians radio network does indeed send tones! The Cavs do also, not sure about the Brownies

Kinda off topic, but I know MRN(The Motor Racing Network) started sending 25/35 EOM Tones last year and for the first few months, they suggested having a board-op until they worked out the kinks.

the only tribe radio affiliate i am aware of on 1460 is wbns-am1460 the fan-- in columbus. akron is 1590wakr, canton is 1480whbc and ytown is 570wkbn.--david5258

Really?!?! Well, the things you learn on the internet. I guess the Cleveland non-network stations cared about the product enough to have a board op...or had the budget for $28 a game...I'm picking the latter.

Indians do have the ability to do tones and to my knowledge it has been there since the move to Starguide many years ago.

Correctamundo!! I guess most of you have been doing other stuff for a while. The Indians, Browns, Buckeyes, etc are ALL either capable of full automation, or semi-automation(meaning a bored-op will have to start and end the broadcast). And, when I was in Parkersburg, they(Clear Channel) ran NASCAR on then 106.1 "The Fox". I had to load the playlist in, but MRN fired ALL of the local stuff(commercials, liners, IDs). That was in '04. Perhaps 'ABQ either didn't have their system set up correctly, OR-they didn't have anyone there to manually play their local content. Shame. ::)

"Why would the Indians be on WABQ?"

RadioMayor:

WABQ 1460 Painesville (not to be confused with the original WABQ 1540, now WWGK) is the former WBKC, which had the Indians and Browns affiliation.

There is some confusion as to whether or not the new owners (with the WABQ gospel format and call letters) were going to retain the Indians and Browns broadcasts. Where I live in Lake County, 1460 comes in somewhat better than 1100. Sometimes 1460 carries the games and sometimes they don't. I have no idea what is going on. I have called the station to ask about the status of the games, and the person that answers the phone said that she didn't know (!!). She took my number and said that someone would be calling me back, but nobody called.

Oh well, this is radio today. Either big corporations who don't care or little stations run on chewing gum and spit.

God help us if we have some local or regional emergency and we have to rely on these operations. I remember during the big blizzard a couple of years ago. Aside from WTAM, virtually every other station was either off the air or had no information whatsoever.

The whole American radio broadcast system has collapsed. Oh well, at least a few people got rich(er).

when i sold advertising for a stand alone am in canton, the ONLY way our station could broadcast the tribe game is IF they picked up the mlb espn weekly game package. is that what wabq did last week?? wabq is no longer owned or controlled my kazmarin. iirc, he traded wabq to set up knr2 on 1540.--david5258

WWGK now operates from WKNR's current Broadview Road studios (and had been since relauching as KNR2 in March). What I'd like to know is if WABQ still uses their old studios from the 1540 transmitter site, which they probably do aside from the "morning news" show, assuming that's still around.

It's pathetic and a disservice to listeners in BOTH Painsville and Cleveland, assuming there are any.
