Waco gets its first local R&B outlet

Considering the market is 15% black, has no local outlet targetting blacks, and R&B KKDA-FM 104.5 Dallas has been, for years, top 5 in the Waco Arbitrons, it's kind of surprising it has taken so long for someone to launch a local R&B outlet. According to R&R, Simmons' recenly acquired KWGW 104.9 Mexia (the former longtime KYCX) is now R&B "104.9 the Groove" targeting Waco. The 104.9 signal is not great, though it has a CP to move 4-5 miles closer. The format is being simulcast on KQRL 1580 Waco, which had been running ABC's Real Country. I guess if folks could handle listening to K104 from 85 miles away, a local rimshot FM and simulcast AM is probably likely to be just as successful.

The only kind of attempt I can remember before this was the old KLMT 96.7 Marlin in the '80s running ABC's old 24/7 Heart & Soul R&B oldies format. That facility has since moved to 92.9 and upgraded to 50 kw (KLRK "Star 92.9").

I had a chance to listen to 104.9 earlier today while i was on the road. Let me just say that they have the smallest playlist i have ever heard for a CHR/Rhythmic station. They make Hot 93.3 in Austin sound like a deep-track station.

The Groove is a very mainstream sounding CHR/Rhythmic. This station is definitely hispanic friendly.

The imaging is not very interesting and I personally don't care for their voice guy.

Lastly, the signal is just not very good in Waco. The signal's fringe area is actually pretty amazing for a class a 30+ miles away but i don't think they are going to be fooling anybody into think that it is a true Waco station. Don't even bother trying with your "walkman".

One more thing: 1590 KQRX is the simulcast station not KQRL as the first post mentioned, at least that was the way it was this morning.

I think from what I read it just switched Tuesday and has no staff yet (PD, DJs, etc.), so this may not be the true sound of what it will sound like once fully launched.

It won't be greatly improved once it signs on its new tower between Mexia and Mart. But, at that point, it likely won't be worse than KKDA-FM's signal there, which is regularly pulling around a 7 share. Even if they got half that, it would be pretty successful considering the combo gets nothing today. I imagine they will get some ratings if they do launch something semi-decent even with an AM/weak FM simulcast. Even with just an AM, it might do OK. KIIZ 1050 in Killeen did extremely well before it got moved to 92.3, when it was the only local urban. Until last year, KVSP 1140 did pretty well in OK City as the sole urban (a daytime only operation even) until its owners moved the format last year to a fringe FM station.

allaccess mentioned this afternoon it will be on both AMs in addition to KWGW. Maybe there is just some additional work to add KQRL...

On my trip back home tonight i caught a little of KWGW and discovered that 104-9 The Groove switched from playing CHR/Rhythmic to playing variety country as 104-9 George FM "We play anything country." The imaging sounds really sloppy so this could just be another poorly executed stunt. I am pretty puzzled. Also KQRL 1580 is now simulcasting 104.9. Maybe tomorrow will be another format.

I did some checking and 1049thegroove.com is still available, but 1049georgefm.com is registered to simmons austin. I just can't imagine their management going on record with R&R and then doing something different the next day. I also can't imagine listeners suffering through static just to hear something they can get clearly on 3+ other frequencies.

Can anyone in Waco provide some insight and updates?
