Waco got The Beat

That's odd that they would name it "The Beat" with KBFB in Dallas. I know Dallas stations don't come in great in the Waco area but aren't they at least listenable?

Yes, it's a little odd, considering that KBFB (along with K104, for that matter) has shown up in the ratings there for years. Many of the D/FW stations make it into Waco with "listenable" signals. But if M&M can program KWBT as "Waco's Beat" with a definitely local feel to it they could do fairly well despite a less than stellar signal.

The sale to M&M, along with others in the Waco cluster, is still pending.

That's disappointing. I was hoping 104-9 would go alternative, but it seems like you are happy with the move, bucwyl, so congrats to you.

Meanwhile, I am cancelling my order of 100 T-Shirts that say, Waco's New Rock Alternative, 104-9, The X.

I'm just happy for Waco, because when Amarillo, Lubbock, and Midland/Odessa all got hip hop stations, I was thinking, "What about Waco?" Have Waco ever had a hip hop station? I just feel like everybody should be served in every market. You can say K104 and 97.9 The Beat, but do they talk about Waco? 104.9 The Beat will do that.

What did you think about Austin losing Hot 93-3? I stopped listening to Hip Hop when Juvenile got out of the game, so I'm not the biggest hip hop fan, but I always thought of Hot 93-3 as one of the best hip hop stations in the nation, plus it has a big coverage area, you could hear it in Waco, and that may have been the reason Waco never had a hip hop station.

104.9 The Beat that is.... Is this Waco's first hip hop and r&b station? Anyway, www.1049thebeatonline.com. Oh yeah, calls are KWBT FM.

Hip hop...yes, it would be the first local one.

Otherwise, in the '80s, KLMT 96.7 Marlin/Waco ran either SMN's old The Touch urban AC format or the Heart & Soul R&B oldies satellite format (I think it was H&S; just not 100% positive...it was one of the two). It changed to SMN's Heat (top 40) as KRXX. It moved to 92.9 to allow 96.7 Georgetown/Austin to upgrade (now KHFI) and is now KLRK.

Emmis really disappointed me when they flipped Hot 93.3. I thought they would be the one company that would be true to the format. Look at Power 106 in L.A. and Hot 97 in NY. I really believe Emmis did that, because of pressure.

Wow! It took this long for Waco to get some hip hop in the city.

Folks, more changes are coming. Expect 104.1 KWOW ("La Ley") to move up the dial to 106.7, liscensed to Lorena with a decent signal into Bell County (there is no local spanish station in Killeen-Temple). When this happens, 104.1 will likely become a classic rock/hits hybrid called "Doc FM." Meanwhile, 107.9 is/was expected to go urban...however, that plan may have changed with the recent developments on 104.9. Could 107.9 go Country, instead? If so, they better do it before 92.9...if that rumor/speculation is true.

Can't see anyone doing Alternative...not much potential there. The best candidate for alternative would be 94.5 (which has absolutely no ratings), but that'll never happen with the current ownership.

Wooow.. So urban was in the plans for Waco either way..

First hip hop station for Limestone County as well. I remember "The Groove" going to 104.9 a few years back, and that changed in what, 2 weeks? Hip Hop in Mexia? Groesbeck? Teague? Wortham?

You may be targetting Waco, but these little one-horse towns are where 104.9's signal is based and best. If they can get 104.9's signal upgraded to really penetrate Waco, then yes it should do amazing. As of now, where the signal is best suited is prime real estate for country music. Why else would KLRK be rumored to flip? The success of this flip will rest with the approval and build out of a new facility, one probably licensed elsewhere than Mexia, Texas. If that gets dismissed, put your last dollar on 104.9 running back to country in a heart "beat".

Did M&M also purchase the old KYCX 105 studios in Mexia? Last time I was up there the building was still there with the KYCX sign still on front. What are M&M doing with 1590 now? Is it hip hopping too?

I'm sure the 104.9 flip to urban comes from the theory that urban listeners will strain and put up with a few signal problems in order to hear their favorite music. That has tended to hold true unless there's a full market signal that does the same format, hence the more than 10 share KKDA-FM and KBFB got in Waco's Fall '09 book.

Yes. Liscensed to Hewitt. Although the tower, I beleive, will be further south near Lorena.

I disagree, I think there is great potential. Where does alternative do well? In areas where there are college students and military. Waco has both.

I would take 94.5, it doesn't have the strongest signal, but with the frequency you could run a simulcast of Houston's 94-5 the Buzz and not have to hire local DJs. I think Wacoans would think it is cool they are picking up a Houston station and would be more inclined to tune in.
