Waco Market, What's up?

How are things in Waco? Is the market still a training ground for the newly christened reporters, anchors, and behind the scenes folks? Just wondering.

Yep, that's an apt desription, whether it's KWTX, KCEN or KXXV. Things are still the same after all these years and it shows. A select few may have a chance to move on, but most will never make it in larger markets.

Thats especially true with KXXV. An idioic managment staff plus an ever worse repuation for "news" has made this station a eyesore. Ann Harder latched onto that place and has rode that pony for years,at least nancy snell left for (somewhat)greener pastures(I knew her when she had small market hair). Most of the folks through the doors at KWTX come in and leave within a few years(great teaching station with a great news director, virgil teeter) and has had the most departures to Dallas, Austin/SA, Houston and beyond. KCEN is the place where great talent either gets stuck in the tar pit(Steven Iandoli) or old dinos(like Andy Anderson and John Gilbert) go to die.

I for one like Andy and John. Both are well accomplished anchors. Each can hold their own in any market. I beleive that you are correct about the other two stations, but that you are wrong about Andy and John.

Chris, John had a cherry gig in Las Vegas, yet "gives it up" to move to the armpit of central texas. Im not doubting the mans cred or his experience. Im just saying that he didnt make the best career choice IMHO. Andy, on the other hand, didnt even try. He just plopped into KCEN and never even tried in another market.

Ray left KXXV about 4 years ago IIRC. Last I heard he still lived in the area. I have no idea what he's doing for a living.

There's a long strange trail to John Basham though. He left KXXV in 1998 - only to return for a brief time in 2002. I have no idea why he came back or left, but I think his departure hastened the firing of GM Jeff Cook. Between Basham's stints at KXXV: he ran a restaurant, ran for Justice of the Peace in McLennan County twice and lost, got married and became a police officer. He worked for the TSTC Police Department for a time. After his second run at KXXV, he worked for the Hubbard PD and left. Last I heard, he had moved to Fort Worth.

Wow this guy sounds like a bizarre movie plot. He's all over the map. Actually the whole thing soungs like a bad TV soap opera plot.

All kidding aside, KXXV has actually had the best track record of any of the Waco stations when it comes to sending talent on to bigger markets.

E.D. Hill, the Fox News Channel morning co-host and Kristine Kahanek, KTVT Chief Meteorologist both worked there in the past. There's a fairly long list of others who work in top 15 markets in news and weather.

The problem with KWTX, the market leader, is that no one ever seems to leave.
About the only high-profile departure to a bigger market in recent years was Betty Nguyen. She went to KTVT in Fort Worth as a morning anchor and now works at CNN. KWTX fired their main female anchor last year and she wound up working as a repoter at KXAS in Fort Worth. Sports guy Robert Flores went to Austin but was fired because the f-word came out on the air when some doofus on the morning show ran the wrong take of his taped morning sports report. He's now at ESPNEWS. (not the main network)

Wow, I remember reading about the robert flores case everywhere. I didn't realize he got a job at espnnews. Betty Nguyen is a great anchor to watch on cnn. And who new E.D. Hill ever worked in Waco of all places? That's pretty cool.

You guys also forgot about Elise Morgan. She was co-anchor on 10 until she got her gig at NBC5. Also, WFAA only pulls their local waco/temple/killeen feed from KWTX, as KXXV both has low-grade video and also made an enemy with belo with local market "must carry".

(fyi - Elise is only a free-lancer at KXAS)

The WFAA/KXXV feud (or WFAA/KWTX marriage) goes back long before the "must carry" business.

Keep a couple of things in mind:
KWTX has been around for more than 50 years. KXXV has been around for 20 years.
If I recall correctly, KWTX was a dual ABC/CBS affil while KCEN had NBC/CBS. WFAA worked with KWTX quite a bit during this time, for obvious reasons.

In 1985, KXXV signed on the air and took the NBC affiliation. KCEN wound up with ABC while KWTX had CBS. After a few years, NBC wanted back on a stronger VHF station and jumped to KCEN while ABC went to KXXV. It was at that point that KXXV and WFAA had to start dealing with each other.

As I hear it, things weren't bad at first. But at some point, KXXV fed something to KDFW that WFAA wanted. That made WFAA mad. WFAA still had a relationship with KWTX and got what they wanted. The rest is history. The two news departments have been joined at the hip ever since. This was before the Branch Davidian business even started.

KWTX has copied WFAA's look and style at every turn. KWTX even gets custom standups and live shots from WFAA reporters from time to time.

1st: I thought elise was f/t, should be IMHO. She'd be alot better than some of the jobbers they have on now.

2nd: Frankly, KXXV is a joke. Ann Harder needs to be tossed. Someone who brings their personal "beliefs" onto a newscast and into station-produced programming (Remember "Save Sex" anyone?) has no business behind the anchor desk. She has that station wrapped around her little finger. I give ya 20 bucks she has a say in whos hired/fired on the staff.

3rd: Im also curious, does KWTX still use the golden pipes of Doc Morgan in their station imaging? Maybe they can teach WFAA some tricks to make their newscast more palitible :)

Speaking of personal beliefs getting on the air--did anyone else see the shameless display bordering on a sermon last week on Fox after Michael Jackson was found innocent. Granted, Fox is bent all the way to the right anyway, but their reporters and anchors were just sputtering they were so flabbergasted. And Shepherd Smith, Mr. Ultra Right, actually was pounding his first on the anchor desk he got so carried away with the "travesty of justice" he was "having to witness." It was so bad as to be comical. Hope somebody slipped him a Valium. The guy was a basket case.

Sheps another one of those loonies (along with John Gibson, O'Riley and Gretta Van Dogface)that Fox News seems to deal in. Must be the ties to Rupert Murdoch IMHO.

Doc is still in full effect at KWTX

Don't lay all that on Ann Harder.

1. I promise you she has no say in who's hired. If she did, many people would not be there now.

2. The "Save Sex" thing came right from the GM's office. He believed it was his duty to force KXXV to fight moral decay in society. Whatever.

I don't know what has gone in since that debacle. Do you have another example of her putting her beliefs in a newscast?

"Save Sex" is about abstinence, isn't it?

I would say they're pretty darn good in their production quality for such a small market. Better than anything KXXV pushes out
