Waco NCE TV (1987-2012)

KDYW, formerly KWBU, has surrendered its license to the FCC. The station is no more.

Dallas-based Daystar tried to buy the station from Brazos Valley Broadcasting Foundation, but public opposition to a similar station purchase in Orlando caused the FCC to question Daystar's proposal to buy the Waco station, and the FCC found that the buyer group was not qualified to hold an NCE station in Waco. Six months later, Brazos had not found a new buyer, and decided to turn in the license.

Wow. That's surprising. I have said before that I thought that market was a tough one for a PBS station. With KWBU and KNCT splitting the area, they were both chasing too small an audience to make it financially feasible for both stations to survive.

It seems to me that KNCT should probably find a way to cover the whole Waco-Temple-Killeen area with its signal. When I lived in Waco, it was very hard to get channel 46, but 34 was clear as a bell. (yes, it's been 12 years since I lived there) Maybe KNCT could cover the whole market if it moved to the same antenna farm (or area) where 10, 25 and 44 have their sticks. (channel 6 is several miles east of there) If not, perhaps KERA could try to put a translator in Waco on channel 20.

Or KNCT does the same thing.

I recall KNCT could be seen in Austin during the analog days. When KNCT signed on in 1970 it became the second station receivable on the UHF band which had previously been occupied only by the old KHFI/42.
