WACQ Moves from AM 1130 to 580

As I was scanning the radio today, I noticed that WACQ is now braodcasting on AM 580... AM 1130 is silent at the time. I wonder if The Rejoice! Musical Soul Food format will end up on 1130, or if there's something else in store...

Westburg filed for a "silent" STA from the FCC. Can keep it off the air and retain the license for 1 year before having to resume programming. Maybe nothing on there for a while. I know they were trying to sell it for $800k. Not worth $100. Tough situation to be in.

The 580 signal is nearly grade A daytime in east Montgomery - grade B throughout the rest of Montgomery (primarily because of the overhead power lines and such). At night, recently, you can eek out 580 on the extreme east side of town. It would be a shame if the 1130 signal were to remain silent however - especially after the allowable upgrade to 25 K.

Not as good as 1130 was at least in NE Montgomery. I heard there was an upgrade in the works for 580. I listen for the Braves pregame shows, and the Alabama Football pre-pregame show.

I noticed this morning (July 4) both 580 AM and 1130 AM were both off the air.

I didn't check later in the day. Hope the 580 situation was just a temporary one. Looks like 1130 AM will be off the air with the silent STA filing.

580 is back as of today... in fact, I believe at this time (1115 PM) they are still runnng every bit of 500 watts.... Their nightime signal is usually fair in Auburn with 126 watts, but tonight it is solid city grade...

I'd be interested to know the upgrade potential of 580… The rules for AM are like voodoo to me so I can't even begin to put forth an educated guess. The only other station even remotely close on 580 anymore is in Augusta, Georgia and it's 5 kW days. But there's a 590 in Panama City and one in Atlanta. 570 is in Gadsden. So maybe there's some wiggle room, at least for days.

There's a 580 in Tupelo, Miss. (WELO).   It has a pretty decent signal for what I think is now 700 watts (used to be 1,000 back when they had a five-stick farm north of town).    I doubt WACQ would be able to go much higher than 500 -- assuming a change in location closer to Tallassee -- without investing in a directional array.   These days, I don't see that step being taken.
